There has never been another video game with as infamous a background as Duke Nukem Forever. It has become an iconic symbol of development hell and vaporware...and just when you think the game has finally been put to rest, it always comes back with a vengeance.
In 1996 3D Realms released Duke Nukem 3D, a ground breaking first-person shooter that won over gamers with incredibly interactive environments, adult humor, addicting multiplayer gameplay, and...well...strippers. The game quickly climbed the sales charts and was a smashing success. Within one year 3D Realms began developing Duke Nukem Forever. Over the next decade the game was plagued with multiple engine changes, reboots, publisher fights and finally the layoff of the entire development team and the closing of 3D Realms in 2009.
But what was thought to be the end of one of the greatest franchises in PC gaming history, ended up becoming a new beginning. Nine former 3D Realms employees formed the independent studio Triptych Games and continued to work on the game from their homes. Soon Gearbox Software was approached and given the opportunity to assist Triptych Games in their efforts to revive the title. Gearbox quickly agreed and convinced their publisher, 2K Games, to financially back the venture. On September 3, 2010 Duke Nukem Forever was reintroduced to the world at the Penny Arcade Expo and attendees were allowed to try out a playable demo. Randy Pitchford, CEO at Gearbox Software, informed the press that Duke Nukem Forever would be released sometime in 2011.
And that, friends, is a brief summary of a long and sordid history.
