WOW: Cataclysm is fastest selling PC game of all time
Posted by: Caleb Welty at Dec. 13, 2010 9:12 am

Remember when Myst was the best selling game of all time? While exact numbers are hard to pin down, Myst (which was released in 1993) sold a little over 9 million copies. Maybe that provides a little perspective to Blizzard's announcement that WOW:Cataclysm sold 3.3 million copies in 24 hours...literally more than a third of Myst's total sales from over a decade long period.
Of course the market for PC games is a lot different today than it was in 1993, so in that sense we are comparing apples to oranges. Still, World of Warcraft is clearly a very popular game.
Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment, put out an official statement to mark the occasion, "We had to bring Azeroth to the brink of destruction in Cataclysm, but the result was our best expansion yet. We want to thank all of our new, existing, and returning players throughout the world for their incredible enthusiasm and support, and we look forward to hearing what they think about all the new content."
Christmas will be good in the Blizzard offices this year!

Thanks guys! I always feel the need to talk back at you while I estiln to your podcast maybe I should estiln live and lurk in the chatroom! I was sad to hear about the guy with wife aggro. My husband plays WoW, and has (off and on) since shortly after we started dating 5 years ago (we've been married 2 1/2 years). Sometimes I would get upset if I felt he was spending too much time on WoW his solution was to recruit me! He paid for the game (Vanilla WoW thru WotLK), paid for my first 2 months of game time (just so he could get the RaF mount!) and played with me as much as I wanted for the first 3 months. And here I am, so in love with WoW that I estiln to The Instance at work and wish I were at home playing.
