Blizzard announced today that Diablo 3 will allow players to interact with NPC 'crafters'. This means that you can hire jewelers, blacksmiths and mystics to follow you and craft new items from loot that your victims drop.

As expected blacksmiths create weapons/armor, mystics create scrolls/runes/etc and jewelers create...well...jewels. There will be special quests that require you use these guys, they'll have skills you can upgrade and of course elaborate back stories.
