Well here we go. Our palms are sweaty with anticipation as we countdown to the next great Elder Scrolls game.

Fortunately our ravaging appetite for all things Skyrim has been temporarily abated by an in-game trailer from Bethesda Softworks. You can watch it after the break. And don't say we didn't warn you, if after watching the trailer you find you can hardly bare the waiting.

Gears of War 3 due September 20th, beta this Springhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/234/gears-of-war-3-due-september-20th-beta-this-spring

Well we knew it was coming soon and now we know when soon is. Today Microsoft announced that Gears of War 3 will be released on September 20, 2011 for the Xbox 360. So how excited is Microsoft? Excited enough to insert the following gushing sentence in their press release: "Gears of War 3 is the glorious conclusion to one of the most memorable sagas in video games' history and this is a date you certainly don't want to miss."

Glorious conclusion of a memorable saga?!? If that doesn't give you swells of emotional outbursts (i.e. crying to the layman) than you must be made of stone. Oh Microsoft, we won't miss this date...oh no we won't.

Just in case you guys aren't up to speed on why Microsoft is literally wetting their pants over this game, check out the following features:

· An enthralling cinematic story that captivates players in an intimately intense action game
· Five-on-five multiplayer experience as well as four player campaign co-op experience
· New multiplayer game modes including 'Beast Mode' – offering a new twist to the game where you take on the role of the locust horde and their assorted variations!
· New maps including: Trenches which features an impressive sand storm that reduces your visibility, as well as Overpass, Mercy, Checkout, and Thrashball
· New weapons including: The Bayonet Charge, The Retro Lancer, The Sawed-off Shotgun, The OneShot – a heavy sniper rifle that shoots through shields or cover for a surprise one shot kill, The Incendiary Grenade, The Digger Launcher and a few subtle tweaks to old favourites Hammerburst and The Classic Lancer. Don't forget that each weapon now has its own execution move!

In related news, the Associate Press is confirming that the public multiplayer beta test will be this spring. Nice! Also, the same had a juicy quote from the design director, Cliff Bleszinski, regarding Lambent (or is it 'The Lambent'?)...the game's featured new enemies. "They burst out of the ground in these veiny, treelike stalks that transport them throughout the world. It's like an embryonic sac. It's nasty stuff. You fight those guys for about a third of the experience, then for the rest of the game you deal with the latest evolution of — or should I say the devolving — Locust."

Oh wow...that does sound good. Ok, now we're really excited too!

Sweet Trailer for Dead Islandhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/233/sweet-trailer-for-dead-island

Artistic filming meets zombie terror in the official trailer for Dead Island. Critics are saying it's the best gaming trailer ever made...we agree, but than we remembered that The Phantom Menace had the best Star Wars trailer ever and we know how that turned out.

So watch it, love it, analyze it and watch it again and again...but remember, it's just a trailer!

DNF gameplay 16-18 hourshttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/232/dnf-gameplay-16-18-hours

On a recent episode of GTTV, Randy Pitchford of Gearbox Software announced that the typical game play length for Duke Nukem Forever is 16-18 hours. He also took the opportunity to make a dig at the Call of Duty franchise by saying, "I know, it's like 3 or 4 Call of Duties right? I'm not kidding."

This is good news for gamers since we're lucky if we get 8-10 hours of single-player goodness out of a modern first-person shooter. And, considering how long we've had to wait for DNF, we really do deserve more than a few sleepless nights with the Duke!

We've got a new trailer for iD Software's Rage. Lots of vehicular manslaughter, mutants, mutant heads mounted on walls, super mutants, giant mutants, fat mutants, oh and what appears to be a controllable spider robot.

Clearly mutants are an important part of this game...which will be released September 13th, 2011.

Its for reals player! Duke Nukem Forever has a release date.http://www.blankgamer.com/news/228/its-for-reals-player-duke-nukem-forever-has-a-release-date

Well what do you know...apparently Duke Nukem Forever really is going to be released! Courtesy of Game Informer we've learned this morning that the official North American release date is May 3, 2011...for everyone else it will be May 6, 2011.

The ever jovial Randy Pitchford (President of Gearbox Software) seemed very pleased to, as he put it, "reveal the moment of truth for the most inconceivable, incorrigible and inspiring turn around story in the history of the video game industry – the coming of Duke Nukem Forever on May 3, 2011."

Can't argue with you Randy. It certainly is inconceivable!

Oh and remember our news article about how Amazon.com was predicting a May 31, 2001 release date? Apparently their reliable source isn't so reliable.

Brink's incredible sound effectshttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/227/brinks-incredible-sound-effects

One thing we've learned over the years about video game immersion is that quality sound effects are critical. We're no longer living in the age of midi tracks. Gamers expect 'movie quality' environmental sounds.

The problem with those expectations are that video games and movies are two completely different beasts. Movie directors have complete control over what sounds are played in any particular scene. But in video games (and in particular multiplayer action games) every shot, explosion, ricochet, scream, and recoil must have an accompanying sound...which tends to produce one giant mishmash of loud noise. This was one of Chris Sweetman's, the Audio Director at Splash Damage, primary concerns while he was developing the audio tracks for Brink. As he put it, "Having played many single player and multiplayer shooters, there was one thing that always concerned me - sonic space. In other words, how do you overcome the problem of having too many sounds all playing at the same time?"

Chris has posted a great blog on the Brink website detailing his efforts to solve this problem (and others) while providing top quality and innovative sound effects. It is a fascinating look at the effort that goes into an aspect of video gaming that often gets over looked by gamers. Which is probably a good thing. After all, when we notice a particular sound effect it tends to be for negative reasons.

Skyrim will be a Modder's delighthttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/226/skyrim-will-be-a-modders-delight

Bethesda Softworks has a long history of supporting the modding community...Oblivion was a prime example of this. Want to watch insects and birds flying around? There's a mod for that. Want to add fatalities? There's a mod for that. Tired of the 1,800+ bugs that Bethesda never got a chance to fix? Well there's a mod for that too.

Fortunately the Bethesda guys understand that the underpinning of a great PC Gaming community is the ongoing new content that modders can provide. So it really wasn't a surprise when they posted the following on their blog, "As Game Informer confirmed on Monday, Skyrim’s new engine has been dubbed the 'Creation Engine.' Accompanying that engine will be the Creation Kit, our suite of level-building tools that we’ll be releasing to the community, much like the Elder Scrolls Construction Set for Morrowind and Oblivion."

This is a excellent news! Frankly, we can't wait to run around Skyrim slaughtering NPCs with a lightsaber. Wootz!

Skyrim's brand new technologyhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/224/skyrims-brand-new-technology

Game Informer has just posted an exclusive feature article detailing the technological improvements Bethesda Softworks has made for Skyrim. As you would expect, Game Informer has packed in a lot of details...but we'll do our best to summarize the most important!

- Bethesda has completely rewritten the game engine for Skyrim and has dubbed it the 'Creation Engine and Kit'. This new engine is specifically designed for Skyrim's northern mountain wilderness environment, which means lots of snow effects! They've also overhauled the draw distance and light and shadow technology. Their goal was that the engine would be able to dynamically handle both the sweeping vistas and the flickering lights and shadows immediately in front of the player.
- Speaking of snow and the environment, Bethesda put a lot of effort into both realistic snowfall and snow accumulation. As snow falls in the game the amount that accumulates will differ depending on the surface.
- The creation of trees has also been overhauled. Now, instead of just leaves flickering in the wind the entire tree will respond. Individual branches will be assigned weight, which will influence how much violently they are moved by the wind.
- Character AI, or as Bethesda refers to it 'Radiant AI', has also been overhauled. No longer will you see NPC's loitering in a city square. Now everyone has been assigned jobs and tasks that are impacted by gameplay. For instance, a bar keeper will be actively serving drinks, cleaning tables, etc. If you kill him and than return to the bar later in the game, you'll discover that someone else in his family has taken on the bar keeping responsibilities. Oh and they won't be pleased that you killed their brother, father, etc.
- Quests are now tailored for individual players. If an NPC recognizes that you are a terror with a bow, they'll give you a quest designed for that skill. Or maybe they'll ask you to train them or challenge you to a duel. Oh and that family member who had to take over the family bar because of your dastardly deed? They are looking for revenge and the quest they'll give you could reflect that.

Well there you have it. More and more details on what could be the biggest game the year!

Sierra adventure games...resurrected on the Internethttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/222/sierra-adventure-gamesresurrected-on-the-internet

Hardcore gaming fans are notorious nostalgics who can't let go of the past. Don't be too hard on them though, it's not their fault. It's the developers who make these great games that should be blamed. How dare you give us addicting entertainment!

A great example of this desperate clinging to the past can be found at sarien.net. Here, a dedicated gamer has been porting ancient Sierra Online adventure games for your playing pleasure. Seriously. You can actually play Space Quest: The Sarien Encounter in your Internet browser. Plus the experience has been customized for the iPad, which is what you see in the above screenshot.

We've dialed up the sarcasm for this article...but don't let that confuse you. This is an epic website, that pulls off some amazing feats. We highly recommend that anyone who loves 90s adventure games, head on over and check this out.

And the Skyrim news starts fallinghttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/219/and-the-skyrim-news-starts-falling

As you probably know, the February issue of Game Informer features an in-depth article on Bethesda Softwork's Skyrim. Even though the magazine hasn't hit newsstands yet, tidbits from the article are leaking on the Interwebs as we speak.

Here is the best of what we've heard so far:

- Enemy leveling will imitate Fallout 3, where enemy skills were only adjusted when you first entered a critical area.
- Skyrim will feature dual wielding. Want to hold two swords, a sword and a shield, or even two shields? You can.
- The storyline is set 200 years after Oblivion.
- The availability of quests will be far more dynamic than in the previous games. Actions and decisions you take throughout the game will influence the NPC's willingness to give you quests.

We'll continue to post more updates as we hear them!

Microsoft crows about the Xboxhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/217/microsoft-crows-about-the-xbox
He wasn't kidding. In the last 60 days they have sold 8 million Kinects and more gaming consoles than any other company. Wondering how many 360s they've sold? Over 50 million. Plus Xbox Live now has 30 million users and is adding a new member ever 2 seconds.

The clear message here is that the Kinect has been a major success for Microsoft. It has handily beat their estimated sales number of 5 million and has re-energized the Xbox 360.

Steve Ballmer also used the event to announce that Hulu Plus is coming to Xbox Live with Kinect controls. Netflix will also be adding Kinect controls in an upcoming update.

You Don't Know Jack delayed...a littlehttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/216/you-dont-know-jack-delayeda-little

First things first...for our under 20 crowd we are not talking about the HBO show.

What we are talking about is the first new You Don't Know Jack (hereafter referred to as YDKJ) title in eight years. That's right, the last time we got our hands on the PC party game franchise of the 90's was back in 2003.

For those who aren't in the know, YDKJ is a party trivia game geared towards adults. This does not mean it's a trivia game about porn. Instead it means a strange but entertaining combination of tough questions and late night humor. These games were a lot of fun but not something you want to play with Mom. At least not our moms.

First released in 1995, YDKJ titles were pumped out at dizzying rates until 2000 when the developers realized that they had run out of trivia questions (or customers). They released one more title in 2003, but since then have laid low...until now.

Originally scheduled for January 25, THQ has announced that they need a few more weeks of polish time. So if you're dying for another round of party trivia, and who isn't, you will need to wait until February 8th.

The game will be shipped for the DS, WII, PS3 and Xbox 360. As usually the PC gets screwed (fyi, that's an in-game reference).

Gaming news is slow around the holidays and most of what comes out isn't worth reading...but we'd be remiss if we failed to mention this one. A group of Finnish film makers have posted their tribute to the upcoming game, Duke Nukem Forever. It's extremely well done, very 'Duke Nukem-ish', and it will help rabid fans pass the time until the game is released.

In case the above image wasn't enough of a clue, the video includes some pole-dancers (Duke doesn't give singles to his sister). There isn't any nudity but, for those who care, it is obviously a mature theme.

Crashers is now in closed betahttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/209/crashers-is-now-in-closed-beta

Punchers Impact has just announced that their MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena for the uninformed) genre title Crashers has enter closed beta status. It appears to be a standard MOBA, meaning that it features an all out duel to the death in an arena. To accomplish this, players are given large vehicles that liberally dole our painful death to whoever crosses their path.

Click here to go to the game's Facebook fan page, where you can view pictures, learn more about the title, and profess your undying love for MOBAs by 'liking' the page. They are also running a promotion where 250 of the first 1000 fans of the page receive a beta key!

PARIS – December 21, 2010 – Punchers Impact today announced that its upcoming vehicular MOBA game, Crasher, has entered closed beta. To celebrate, the developer has also launched the official Facebook fan page for Crasher at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Crasher-Game/112660082113828, and will be randomly selecting 250 of the first 1000 fans to receive beta keys. These fans will be the first to experience Crasher and will play a major role in testing and feedback on gameplay. Crasher will be available in Q1 2011 via Steam for PC and MAC for $30.00 USD.

“Crasher is really a passion project for us as we are all huge fans of the MOBA genre and other community-based games like DotA and HoN,” said Guillaume Descamps, Studio Director. “It’s exciting for us to finally have the first crew of MOBA fans trying our game and providing their feedback.”

Crasher is a multiplayer online battle arena game (MOBA) that introduces fast-paced, vehicular combat to this unique genre. Being the first MOBA ever to feature vehicles, Crasher intensifies the action and places gamers behind the wheel of distinctive, fantasy-style vehicles where speed, team-play and tactics are key as players engage in team vs. team combat. With strong RPG elements, such as distinct classes and heavy itemization, the game requires strategic, integrated play among teams of up to five players (5 vs 5). Each team must use the best mix of tactics, vehicle arsenals and individual skills to demolish anything that stands in their way and achieve victory. Each vehicle has its own, unique features and style reflective of the abandoned,post-apocalyptic environments in which they operate.

Ideal for the e-sport communities, Crasher features Ladder rankings based on individual player AND team performance, with a unique matchmaking system to create a truly competitive environment. Spectator mode, designed mainly for official ranked matches, allows players to log on and witness the strategic team play without actually entering the battle. Crasher also allows a player to unlock new weapons and upgrades in order to enhance their equipment and customize vehicles to the fullest. A full reward system (XP and credits) allows the freedom for players to choose how they want to spend their credits to purchase items, weapons, skills, etc.

The Aralon: Sword and Shadow reviewhttp://www.blankgamer.com/review/208/the-aralon-sword-and-shadow-review
“You’ve come a long way, baby.”

I’m not prone to sentimental musings but I couldn’t help but repeat that infamous quote while playing Aralon: Sword and Shadow. And why not? When the iPhone was first released, we knew it was a potential gaming platform, and yet who could have imagined that less than three years after the app store went live, we could carry Oblivion in our pockets? Ok, so it isn't Oblivion, but my point is that Aralon is a great game. Yes, the game has its faults but the overall experience is fantastic. Just the ability to play a 3D role-playing game on an iPhone is incredible! But when you throw in an intuitive control system, beautiful graphics, and an intriguing storyline...can RPG fans be any happier? So here’s the bottom line, Aralon: Sword and Shadow is the best RPG, and possibly the best game, on the iOS platform.
This guy is peeved at all the picture taking tourists.

The Game

The game’s storyline is about what you would expect for a medieval fantasy. You are a nobody raised in a small village that no one cares about. Unbeknown to you, your dead father wasn’t just the farming peasant that you pegged him to be...he was actually the former head of the royal guard, forced into hiding to protect himself and his family. The game starts when an old friend of your father's stops by your house and with his dying breath manages to spill the beans about your father, the Kingdom, and its mad King. Before you know it, you are on a quest to save said Kingdom from the ultimate act of betrayal and serve a dish of revenge to the man who ruined your father’s career. The storyline isn’t fancy but plays to the central theme that all RPG’s must have...the poor underdog with a unique opportunity to save the world. (A friend of a friend once told us that someone tried making an RPG where the main character was a rich elitist brat who saved the world with his gold plated broadsword...but when a rip began to appear in the Universe, they quickly stopped and returned to the tried-but-true RPG formula.)

The game starts with character customization which, while limited, is well done. I chose a male elf with dark hair and some crazy facial tattoos (think Mike Tyson but with a manly voice). I always role-play as an Elf, it's my thing, but there were also two other races: humans and trolls. I decided that my hero would be a Ranger not just because that is the career all Elves are meant for...but because it seemed to be the middle road of the four classes: Warrior, Rogue, Ranger, and Mage. I reviewed the game on an iPhone 4 and I felt the customization options were perfect... involved enough to feel like an RPG, but simple enough to work with the limited screen real estate and get you into the game quickly. As the game progresses, you can customize character traits: Strength, Agility, Endurance, Intellect, and Spirit. You also can train your character in specified skill sets, and Crescent Moon fleshes out this concept with an ingenious tech tree...reminiscent of Civilization. Again it’s a KISS inspired design, which fits the platform. Lastly, depending on how you play, your character will have a reputation of either being a law-abiding citizen or an outlaw. Naturally the city guards do not take kindly to outlaws.
My hot tat.

From the get-go, the thing that REALLY jumps out and bites you is the fantastic graphics. I’d like to drone on and on about how beautiful it is, so let’s deal with the cons first. First, the redraw distance can sometimes be distracting. Instead of fading in and out, distant objects are literally drawn across your screen as you get closer. Second, there are some clipping issues and sometimes character animation is...well...unnatural. These issues are weird and they hurt the immersion value...but in the grand scheme, minor complaints. Why? Because when you’re looking at a 3.5 inch iPhone screen and you see prancing deer, sly foxes, running rabbits, circling birds, lush fields, leafy trees, grand mountains, lakes with fish, dark caves, and strikingly beautiful sunsets, it’s kinda hard to complain about the little things. Building and character design styles are also extremely well done and, in the end, they are what set this game’s environment above the competition.
No Mountain. A little mountain. OMG, the spine of the world has suddenly appeared!

We’ve already mentioned the deer (which you can kill and eat) but there are plenty of other in-game characters. Gnomes, ogres, wolves, rogues, bears, spiders, killer desert worms (inspired by Tremors?), and even fish (yes you can go fishing) are all enemies that demand to be killed. This is the perfect segue into our first major complaint. For some reason dead enemies do not stay dead. Consistently, when I returned to areas I previously plundered, the enemies I had killed and looted were back in business and itching for a fight (can’t blame them for the last part). This is particularly annoying when you’re raiding a cave/dungeon and you’ve mowed everyone down like the Butcher of Cadiz. Once you’ve reached the end and looted that treasure stash, you would expect a leisurely stroll back to sunlight, right? No. Instead you have a repeat fight with the baddies who should have been rotting in their own entrails.

Fortunately, enemies aren't the only in-game characters. Walking in RPGs is so last year, which explains why Crescent Moon included mounts in the game. Horses, dragons, wolves, and gigantic birds can all be ridden, making travel a whole lot easier. The game uses an interesting technique where you 'summon' your mount when needed, so that you do not need to constantly keep track of where your horse is. You trade realism for convenience and from what I can tell, your mount can not die.

Did I mention that the game lets you keep and train pets? Take that, Oblivion!

Since we’re talking about characters and enemies, you’re probably wondering about combat and the control system. Character movement is controlled by a directional pad in the bottom left corner and the camera perspective is controlled by moving your finger across the screen. Controls are extremely sensitive and even a small swipe can make the camera perspective jump. You have to get used to that and while it feels strange at first, you eventually realize this is an asset. There are times when you really need to move the screen quickly because the game has an anal retentive 'face your enemy' complex during combat. Unless your character is actually facing an enemy, you can't fight back. Sometimes this is a real hassle, but for the most part once you get the hang of the controls you’ll be running around the countryside like a pro.

Combat is controlled with an attack and block button on the lower right side of the screen. Timing your attacks and blocks are critical...even though the success of each action (and sometimes even the completion of the action) seems to be determined by a typical RPG dice roll. I should note that some of our staff have complained that the button size does not scale up for the iPad. In short, a sufficiently sized button on the iPhone becomes an irritatingly tiny button on the iPad. Keep that in mind...if you think size matters.

The last aspect of the control system is automatic 'targeting'. This is great when there are only a few selectable objects on screen but it stinks when object quantity jumps or they are too close together. You can change the selection by tapping another enemy with your finger but sometimes the game doesn’t seem to register your manual selections. For the most part it doesn’t matter, but in fights where there are multiple enemies and you would like to strategically choose your targets, it becomes a hassle. Or, even more common, when there are multiple corpses waiting to be looted...repeatedly I had difficulty selecting the particular one I wanted.

But this game isn’t just about fighting; there are also multitudes of quests begging to be completed. Most of them are the standard RPG fair (go here, kill this, bring back that), they help create that critical perception of an open-ended world. Oh and you’ll be able to hire mercenaries to help you complete these quests - excellent! But yet again, the quests do highlight another major complaint with the game...the world map is far too basic. My humble opinion is that while a detailed world map should be a commonsense feature in an RPG, a next step quest indicator on that map is also a must have. Since I often did not know where to go in order to solve a quest, I found that I accepted all quests and never thought about any particular one until I had accidentally solved it.
I enter Kyle Stronghand's lair...in order to complete a quest.

Kyle was no match for a real elf.

Nice! Thanks for the bow, Kyle.

Sound effects are also nicely done. Not because there are extensive voice-overs, there aren’t and that is missed, but because the music is actually pretty darn good! Background music played consistently, adapted to the environment and after 15-20 hours of gameplay it still wasn’t repetitive. It did get loud though. For some reason during the few times when there were voice-overs, the background music would sometimes get so loud it would drown out all other sound. Fortunately everything is closed captioned, so you could still follow the dialogue. Just another area that needs some polishing.

The Summary

Well there you have it, the Blank Gamer review of Aralan: Sword and Shadow. I’m going to admit right now that for every amazing attribute this game has, there always seem to be a ‘but’ tagging along. The game demands more polish, no question about it and the developers have promised that updates are on there way. But the reality is that this is the best open-world RPG for the iOS bar none. One testament to its lasting appeal is that I consistently found new game interactions as I played...in my book, that is the sign of a quality RPG. So the verdict is this. Aralon's gorgeous graphics, beautiful medieval fantasy-styled environments, engaging storyline, multiple quests, countless items and enemies, and 3D open-world environment should not be missed by anyone dedicated to the love of role-playing.]]>

Max Payne 3 delayed...or maybe worse?http://www.blankgamer.com/news/207/max-payne-3-delayedor-maybe-worse

When Take Two released their quarterly results last week they included an updated release schedule. There was nothing that surprised us on the list - Duke Nukem Forever will hit stores in 2011, BioShock Infinite in 2012, and so on and so forth.

But there was one title that was conspicuously missing...Max Payne 3. You know, the game where Max goes from a svelte action hero to an overweight, balding couch potato in 12 years? Yet he still seems to be able to pull off the crazy action moves we know and love...but we digress.

Anyhow, remember how the game was scheduled for Holidays 2009, then it changed to just '2010'? Well now we've reached the point where Take Two isn't even mentioning it on their release schedule. Not too good, my friends. But don't worry, when Kotaku asked Take Two what was up they said, "We're still working hard on Max, and we'll have more news in the coming months."

So at minimum we know the game is delayed...worst case, they'll let us know that they've really been working hard on their ping-pong skills and the game is official canceled.

Blizzard confirms Titanhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/206/blizzard-confirms-titan

A leaked release chart has been floating around the Interwebs lately. Purportedly it is an internal document from Blizzard...leaked to the press by a mischievous contact in China. We've refrained from commenting on it, simply because of how easy it would be to fake a release schedule. Besides if it is real, what exactly do you learn? Yes it says Diablo 3 will be released in 2011...isn't that what we expected?

Yet there was one news-worthy item from the schedule. Allegedly Blizzard is planning on releasing a game called Titan in 2013. There were no details about game...just the title and the release date.

Well this rumor suddenly received a huge boost in credibility because at the Spike Video Game Awards Destructoid managed to ask Frank Pearce, a producer with Blizzard, what exactly is Titan? This is what he said, "The media is not supposed to know anything about that. It's our next-gen MMO, and we've only started talking about it in a limited fashion because we wanna leverage the fact that we're working on something like that for the purpose of recruiting, getting some of the best talent in the industry on that project."

Ok folks, maybe this leaked release schedule is the real deal!

Infinity Blade collects major App Store cashhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/202/infinity-blade-collects-major-app-store-cash

This morning the iOS GameCenter is reporting that over 280,000 users have played Infinity Blade. 280,000 people buying the game at $6 a piece means that Epic Games made at least $1.7 million dollars in 4 days. On top of that, Epic Games' Vice President Mark Rein has tweeted that the GameCenter numbers are just a small subset of the actual count of people who purchased the game.

Considering that Cut the Rope previously held the fastest selling app record with $1 million in 10 days...it's pretty clear that Infinity Blade has blown the lid off of App Store sales records.

But what's even better is that Mark Rein how now confirmed new FREE content for the game is on the way. Wootz!

WOW: Cataclysm is fastest selling PC game of all timehttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/201/wow-cataclysm-is-fastest-selling-pc-game-of-all-time

Remember when Myst was the best selling game of all time? While exact numbers are hard to pin down, Myst (which was released in 1993) sold a little over 9 million copies. Maybe that provides a little perspective to Blizzard's announcement that WOW:Cataclysm sold 3.3 million copies in 24 hours...literally more than a third of Myst's total sales from over a decade long period.

Of course the market for PC games is a lot different today than it was in 1993, so in that sense we are comparing apples to oranges. Still, World of Warcraft is clearly a very popular game.

Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment, put out an official statement to mark the occasion, "We had to bring Azeroth to the brink of destruction in Cataclysm, but the result was our best expansion yet. We want to thank all of our new, existing, and returning players throughout the world for their incredible enthusiasm and support, and we look forward to hearing what they think about all the new content."

Christmas will be good in the Blizzard offices this year!

And now a new Deus Ex: Human Revolution videohttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/197/and-now-a-new-deus-ex-human-revolution-video

Apparently the world really takes a turn for the worse in 2027...but not for robots or cyborgs who, according to this game, are expecting some incredible advancements in technology over the next couple of years. Invisibility, super strength, x-ray vision...honestly, how will us normal people stand a chance? Well we won't...because when we aren't foolishly protesting in the streets of Detroit we'll be running from the cyborgs mowing us down with built-in machine guns.

That's right, Deus Ex: Human Revolution imagines a very bleak world ahead of us...but that's ok because you get to play one of the lucky people who receive human augmentations. No rioting for you! Instead you get to kick evil police ass, with a pair of shiny swords that shoot out of your arms.

Alright we won't spoil anymore of the video, go see it for yourself. Unfortunately there isn't any in-game footage, but the CGI effects are amazing. First the Halo: Reach video, now this...is there anything these video gurus can't do?

Looks like the guys at Kalypso Media are still working hard on Dungeons. They've just released a gameplay trailer and not only is the game looking good, it also has a particularly evil sounding narrator. And we all know the narrator is the most important part of any gameplay trailer.

So what is Dungeons? It's a dungeon simulator in which the player creates a dungeon by digging tunnels, purchasing and placing artifacts, controlling minions, etc, all for the purpose of luring unlucky heroes into their clutches. The game has clearly been influenced by the old Dungeon Keeper titles, and that's not a bad thing. Those games were an absolute blast and anyone who can both modernize and capture the genius of those games will get a hearty clap on the back from us!

EA very confident in Star Wars: The Old Republichttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/194/ea-very-confident-in-star-wars-the-old-republic

So Eric Brown, the CFO of Electronic Arts, was at a conference in New York where he had this to say about Star Wars: The Old Republic, “Our assumptions for break-even and profitability are not seven-digit subscribers. We think we can run and operate a very successful and profitable MMO at different levels.

“The key thing here is to really perfect the product. We’re shooting for an extremely high quality game experience. We view this as a ten-year opportunity.

Now if we've learned anything from years of reporting on the gaming industry, it's that bigshots at big companies make big statements around Christmas time. Still, if we read between the lines, it does look like EA has a lot of confidence in this game. After all, a ten-year life cycle would be an amazing accomplishment. Not that we don't have faith in BioWare...but it still is hard to imagine.

Of course, ten years of having servers online and ten years of quality gameplay are probably two different things. Maybe we're still gun shy from the disastrous Star Wars Galaxies, but if that game is well on its way to ten years of up time...is that really such a monumental achievement? And considering the Star Wars' gaming franchise over the last decade, frankly we've reached the point were we expect Star Wars games to fail. How sad is that?

For those of you who don't remember, SW:TOR is scheduled for a Spring 2011 release.

WOW: Cataclysm is here!http://www.blankgamer.com/news/191/wow-cataclysm-is-here

Well it's official. The ratio of gamers with pasty white skin to brown sun-tanned skin will skyrocket today...as gamers everywhere forsake family, friends, work, and even sunlight to immerse themselves in the World of Warcraft universe for hours on end.

Yes, Blizzard has just confirmed what we already knew...WOW: Cataclysm will be available in stores today for $39.99 ($79.99 for those interested in the collectors edition and no it doesn't come with a girlfriend, sorry about that). Blizzard also went out of its way to inform us that this is the bestest expansion ever, which is a relief.

Plus, just in case we don't read Wikipedia they also provided this short synopsis, "In World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing has returned, and the world has been reshaped by the devastation left in his wake. In an effort to survive the planet-shattering cataclysm, two new playable races -- worgen and goblins -- join the struggle between the Alliance and the Horde. Players can now begin their journey to the new level cap of 85, discover newly revealed locations, acquire new levels of power, and come face to face with Deathwing in a battle to determine the fate of the world."

We hope you guys love it! Oh and if you crack your head on your mountain-dew stained keyboard, because you've fallen into a mental stupor brought on by hours of blood-shot screen staring...well, don't say we didn't warn you.

The game will be featured in Game Informer's January issue, so for right now all we have is a short lead-in to the storyline: "After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was traveling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive."

Not much there, but we'll be sure to keep you posted!

Oh and just for kicks and giggles, let's compare our modern prequel Lara to the original one.

Hype starts building for Deus Ex: Human Revolutionhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/188/hype-starts-building-for-deus-ex-human-revolution

Well, what do you know. We post a news article for the original Deus Ex yesterday and like magic there is suddenly news on the upcoming game in the series.

Sometime over the last few days a mysterious website went live at http://www.sarifindustries.com/. For those of you who don't remember, Sarif Industries is the company that provided body augmentations in the previous games. Body augmentations allowed players to customize their character with superhuman powers such as strength, speed, vision, etc. It was a critical component of the role-playing elements which made the game so amazing.

If you go to the Sarif Industries website, you'll find a flash intensive design that gives a list of body augmentations that will be available in the next game. Also, if you browse around the site long enough you'll encounter a mini-game that lets you 'hack' into the system and recover data pods detailing some of the armor and weapons found in the game.

It looks like Eidos and Square Enix are trying to kick up the hype a notch or two...which makes sense, considering that 'Early 2011' release date is just around the corner.

Microsoft working on TV for the 360?http://www.blankgamer.com/news/182/microsoft-working-on-tv-for-the-360

So this news item might not be about gaming, but since it involves a dramatic increase in value for the Xbox 360...well, we felt this should be covered.

Reuters is reporting that Microsoft is holding secret discussions with various media companies in order to license TV networks for the Xbox 360. Apparently everything from a pay-per-view model to a 'just for existing cable subscribers' approach has been discussed. Microsoft has also been toying with the idea of adding HBO, Showtime, and other networks using the same 'channel' technique that they used with ESPN.

We like the idea of cable service through the 360...we don't like the idea that you might have to be a cable subscriber in order to receive it. Secret Denmark sources dish on the next Elder Scrolls gamehttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/178/secret-denmark-sources-dish-on-the-next-elder-scrolls-game

Eurogamer is betting all of its chips on a secret source in Denmark who claims that they have proof Bethesda Softworks is working on the next game in the Elder Scrolls franchise. You know, that unpopular series that gave us such duds as Morrowind and Obilivion.

Eurogamer's Denmark Editor-in-chief Kristian West said: "This source not only confirmed that the game is in current production, but also spoke briefly about the content - with fantasy-sounding phrases like Dragon Lord, something with The Blades - and that voice acting for the characters in the game is currently happening in the weeks to follow.

The same source confirmed, with official game documents in hand, that this will be the chronological sequel to what happened in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which is the latest game in the now 16-years-old Elder Scrolls saga and by itself one of the better RPGs for PC and consoles.

The sequel to Oblivion is coming, we can hereby confirm without hesitation. It's been a while since 2006, hasn't it?"

Yes it has, Kristian. Yes it has.

So do we, Blank Gamer, put any stock in this rumor? Not really. We think it's obvious that Bethesda Softworks is working on the next game in the series. The franchise is incredibly popular and Bethesda has confirmed they are hard at work on a new game that uses the Fallout 3 engine. That last point alone indicates an RPG is being developed. So the only unique news here is that they are recording the character voices. We'll need more info before we'll believe they are that far along in development.

The Mass Effect 3 Previewhttp://www.blankgamer.com/preview/171/the-mass-effect-3-preview
Since Mass Effect 3 is one of the few games we are stupid excited about, we wanted to get an early start on substantial coverage. Now is the perfect time to look back to where Mass Effect came from, what it has accomplished thus far, and what we know about the final installment. There is a lot here and more than enough surprises. If you don’t want to devour all the information (and still consider yourself a fan), skip around and find the gems.

***Update***
Bioware has officially confirmed that Mass Effect 3 is scheduled for a Holiday 2011 release date. They have also confirmed that Commander Shepard will be returning to fight the invasion on Earth. You can view the game's teaser video at this link.

The History

Medical PhDs are not your typical career path to making awesome games, but the co-founders of Bioware thought their
smarts could be better spent outside the hospitals. So, doctors Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, the two most educated game developers, set out to make their impact on gaming. They found early success implementing games built loosely on the medieval Dungeons and Dragons RPG system. Their games relied heavily on engaging stories, and gamers responded by opening their arms and wallets.

The untrained eye might see the Mass Effect franchise as a lucky break for the Canadian Doctors. That same untrained fool might think BioWare was getting bored with the medieval RPGs, and that Mass Effect was their “creative way to diversify their offerings.” Both assumptions are, of course, wrong.

It is true that BioWare found early success with the Baldur’s Gate Franchise around the turn of the century. Neverwinter Nights then carried the medieval RPG genre?? a little further. However, these games were just sharpening the tools in BioWare’s utility belt. They were stabilizing the story-telling, refining the romantic flings, and crafting the concept of having NPC characters within a player’s party.

BioWare, however, did not start with medieval RPGs; they started in space with Shattered Steel in 1996. They flirted with space in 2000 when they made MDK2. They got fresh with space in 2003 with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. And in 2007, they rounded third base and slid home with space in Mass Effect. BioWare has a disease, and the only cure is getting more action in space.

Mass Effect was the culmination of BioWare’s past successes. Gaming history will always point back to Mass Effect as the perfect implementation of a new universe. It was a trilogy from the beginning that was supported by paperback novels and executed with surgical accuracy. The action RPG takes a third-person perspective, giving the gamer a closer connection to the protagonist. Cut scenes transition seamlessly like a movie and the whole game enjoys solid cohesion.

Mass Effect: Revelation

BioWare released Mass Effect Revelation, a paperback novel and prequel to the first game, giving gamers their first taste of the universe. The story goes like this: in 2148, humans discovered alien technology buried beneath the surface of Mars. Soon after that discovery, mankind harnessed faster-than-light (FTL) travel capabilities within the alien technology. The aliens, known as the Protheans, left thousands of mass relays throughout the galaxy, enabling virtually instant travel from one solar system to another. The Protheans mysteriously disappeared 50,000 years ago and very little is know about their existence, except that their climate-changing ways ruined any chance of humanity turning Mars into the greatest pleasure planet ever... the bastards.

Inside the game’s universe, mass effect refers to a physics phenomenon with properties similar to gravity and electromagnetism. In real life, physicists refer to it as dark energy. Mass effect not only allows for FTL travel, but it also allows for some localized, environmental manipulations. With the help of certain implanted devices, characters in the Mass Effect universe can have Biotic skills (lift, throw, pull or create barriers) or Tech skills (Hacking technology, creating shield systems or reprogramming synthetic life).

Rear Admiral Jon Grissom led the first team of humans through the mass relay. This team represented the global coalition of mankind, which became known as the Alliance. Mankind quickly found conflict with the Turian Empire, who were unfortunately one of the most powerful alien races in the galaxy. Known as the First Contact War, the Alliance got off to a rocky start with the rest of the galaxy.

The Citadel Council, a multi-species government, intervened in the conflict and eight years later recognized the Alliance by granting them an embassy on the Citadel. The plot thickened when David Anderson, a recent graduate of Alliance’s N7 specialist training program, answered an S.O.S. at an Alliance research facility. He found everyone at the facility dead. It is later revealed that one survivor, 1st Lieutenant Kahlee Sanders had escaped. Now on the run as the primary suspect, Kahlee went into hiding with Anderson in pursuit of answers.

The Citadel Council sent Saren, a Turian Spectre, to investigate the attack at the research facility. Spectres are the Citadel Council’s highest form of enforcement. They are above the law and are charged to accomplish the Council’s missions by any means necessary. Saren and Anderson eventually locate Kahlee. The information she provided about the attack pointed to Had’dah, a wealthy Batarian researching Prothean technology for personal profit.

The Citadel Council decided to send Saren and Anderson after Had’dah; Saren reluctantly agreed to his new partner. Though Had’dah had a small army of mercenaries protecting his complex, Saren refused to work together with Anderson. Anderson went in with stealth and precision while Saren, on the other hand, sabotaged everything with huge explosions and hundreds of innocent casualties. The end result was accomplished with Saren executing Had’dah.

Though this mission was to prove Anderson’s ability to be the first Human Spectre, in Saren’s report to the Citadel Council, he blamed the explosions and the loss of so many lives on Anderson.

The book ends with the revelation that Saren sold data from Had’dah before executing him. This data led him to a gigantic alien ship called Sovereign. It was the most technologically advanced ship ever discovered. Saren planned to use the ship to get revenge on mankind for the Turian losses in the First Contact War.

Mass Effect

The game launched on November 20th, 2007. That season of gaming was a particularly bountiful one as Assassin’s Creed (Ubisoft, Nov 14), Crysis (Crytek Frankfurt, Nov 13), Halo 3 (Bungie, Sept 25), BioShock (Irrational Games, Aug 21) and a number of other noteworthy games were released around the same time. Despite the competition, Mass Effect was well received. Sales were good and reviews were excellent - the series was off to an outstanding start.

In Mass Effect, players could customize the main character, Commander Shepard. They could choose Shepard’s gender, background, biotic or tech class, and appearance. The game began thirty-five years after mankind discovered the alien technology on Mars. Captain Anderson and his executive officer, Commander Shepard, were sent to the human colony world of Eden Prime to recover a recently unearthed Prothean beacon. While on Eden Prime, Shepard encountered Saren, who is also after the beacon and has virtually annihilated the colony with his army of synthetic life-forms known as the Geth. The Council revoked Saren’s status as Spectre and appointed Commander Shepard as the first Human Spectre. Shepard was then tasked with hunting down and stopping Saren.

In pursuit of Saren, Shepard explored the galaxy and completed many side missions. Shepard had the chance to investigate the backgrounds of each teammate and pursue one of several romantic interests. Along the way, he learned that Saren’s massive ship Sovereign was more than just an advanced space ship. It was a Reaper. As the story unfolded, the player learned that Reapers were machines that lay dormant in deep space for thousands of years. They were patient hunters that allowed organic life to develop, find the mass relay technology and spread throughout the galaxy. The Reapers then destroyed all life before going dormant again. This cycle happened numerous times and the Protheans were just the last life form to be annihilated. (Now we feel bad for calling them bastards *Editors Note).

Sovereign lulled Saren into believing that they would spare him if he helped the Reapers’ rapacious return. The climactic ending finished with Shepard saving the Citadel and mankind destroying Sovereign. Shepard’s heroic actions gave the human Alliance prominence in the galactic political stage.

Mass Effect: Ascension

Mass Effect Ascension picked the story up shortly after Sovereign’s attack on the Citadel space station. The focus shifted to the Ascension Project, which aimed to develop human biotic abilities. They had one very promising student, Gillian, who was also very important to the Cerberus Corporation. Cerberus was a massive corporation out to advance human dominance in the galaxy, and they ran on a xenophobic repugnance of all alien races.

Cerberus sent a mole inside the Ascension Project to administer a drug to Gillian to enhance her biotic capabilities. The drug nearly killed her. So, Kahlee Sanders, who was working with her at the Ascension Projecther, took Gillian and her adopted father Paul Grayson into hiding. Paul Grayson knew his betrayal of Cerberus would eventually catch up with him, but he wanted the best for his adopted daughter. In their attempt to leave the Ascension Project, another Cerberus operative named Pel decided to take the fugitives as prisoners and sell them to the mysterious alien race known as The Collectors.

The three manage to escape before Pel’s hostage transfer with the help of a Quarian named Lemm. The Quarians were a nomadic people traveling in a migrant fleet of space ships. They are nomadic not by choice but because their home was overrun years earlier by the Geth. Lemm believed Kahlee’s experience with the Geth could help his people recapture their home world.

Grayson managed to escape prior to Lemm’s rescue only to fall into the hands of Cerberus. Wanting to bring Gillian back for more experiments, Cerberus sent commandos to intercept Lemm, Kahlee and Gillian. The three narrowly escaped and returned to the Ascension Project, and Cerberus conceded defeat. However, they did not soon forget about Grayson’s betrayal.

Mass Effect 2

Like the first movie in a trilogy, the first Mass Effect game set the stage for everything. It established the galaxy, the various races and humanity’s role in the universe. Though Commander Shepard saved the galaxy from the pending peril, the main threat still lurked in the shadows. Mass Effect 2 began in 2183 with Commander Shepard and his crew aboard the SSV Normandy, the most advanced ship in the Alliance. An unknown starship ambushed the Normandy, inflicting massive damage. The crew was forced to evacuate, however, Commander Shepard made a daring rescue of Joker, the ships pilot. Joker was saved, but the mysterious starship shatters Normandy’s hull and Shepard was sent into space. Explosions from the ship sent shrapnel through Shepard’s space suit. Shepard died as his body entered the atmosphere of a near by planet.

Meanwhile, isolated yet devastating attacks on distant human colonies were becoming more and more common. The story was the same each time. Communication with the colony would suddenly cease, a scout team would investigate, and the whole colony’s population would be missing. All signs pointed to a re-emergence of the Reapers. It was later found that the Reapers had genetically enhanced an alien race now know as the Collectors. These massive creatures were mindless pawns used by the Reapers to collect organic life.

Cerberus believed Shepard’s experience defeating Sovereign was the only key to putting a stop to these attacks. The Illusive Man, Cerberus’ sole director, spared no expense on a two-year project called Lazarus to bring Shepard back to life. Miranda Lawson headed the Lazarus project and was the first person Shepard saw upon regaining consciousness. The Illusive man informed Shepard of the attacks, but failed to gain any trust. Miranda Lawson, a beautiful and smart character, joined Shepard’s team from the very beginning. Her disarming charm went a long way to disarm Shepard’s skepticism of Cerberus.

The Illusive Man reconstructed the Normandy and assembled a crew for Shepard to begin his mission. The Illusive man had also put together a long dossier on several people he thought would be useful in stopping the Collectors. The player then chose which characters to add to the team and in which order.

It was revealed that the Collector base could be reached by passing through the Omega-4 mass relay. No ship had passed through this particular relay in recent history because a certain Prothean technology was needed in order to pass through it. Shepard must board a derelict Reaper for the needed IFF transponder. Once the IFF Transponder was activated, it emitted a tracking signal. Within moments, Collectors located the signal and boarded the Normandy. The Normandy’s onboard A.I. was able to save the ship, Joker, Shepard and the team from the Collectors, however the entire ship’s crew were taken into the collector’s ship and through the Omega-4 relay.

At this point Shepard was faced with a choice: follow the Collectors through the Omega-4 relay, or continue preparing for the journey through the relay. Going through the relay was the start of the Suicide mission. At this point in the game, several different things could happen depending on how you played the game thus far.

On the other side of the Omega-4 relay, the Normandy found itself in a debris field with hostile sentient defense cruisers. Depending on how many ship upgrades purchased, Shepard could loose much of the team, or everyone could survive. The Normandy was able to destroy the cruisers, however the explosions disabled the Normandy and it was forced to crash land on the Collector’s base station. Shepard led the team into the station where they found the abducted Normandy crew. They were either saved or found dead depending on whether the player goes through the relay immediately or delays.

While Joker worked to revive the Normandy, Shepard fought deeper and deeper into the Collector’s base station. Eventually Shepard discovered at the heart of the base that the Collectors were constructing a new Reaper. The mammoth Reaper looked like a metallic human robot and was in the mid-to-late stages of development. The speculation was that the Reaper looked like a human because it was made from the genetic materials of abducted humans fused with advanced technology.

The Reaper larva gained consciousness and the final epic battle began. Shepard was able to destroy the baby Reaper; he then faced a choice between destroying the Collector’s base or detonating a radiation pulse killing the remaining Collectors and thus leaving the base station to Cerberus for research.

Shepard commanded everyone back to the Normandy after the bomb was set. Before Shepard could climb onto the Normandy, the Collectors opened fire. Shepard must make a daring leap for the exiting Normandy. Depending on how many team members survived the mission, Shepard was either pulled into the Normandy, or slipped through their hands and perished.

The final scene showed a Reaper awakening from deep space. Then slowly, one by one, thousands of Reapers awoke and began descending upon the Milky Way galaxy. With the stage set for Mass Effect 3, one thing was crystal clear; Humanity and the rest of galactic space have only delayed the inevitable.

Mass Effect Retribution

Retribution is the third paperback sci-fi novel in the Mass Effect series. It was released July 27th, 2010. Out of respect for those who plan to read it, we’ll keep things brief and limit the spoilers. The book picks up after the events of Mass Effect 2 with the Illusive Man conducting research on the reapers.

Cerberus acquires some Reaper technology and decides the best way to study the Reapers is to create one. Thus, the Illusive Man finds his old friend Paul Grayson a convenient test subject. It was time for Paul to pay for his betrayal of Cerberus at the Ascension Project. The Reaper tech is fused into Paul’s body and transforms him into a killing machine. David Anderson and Kahlee Sanders are pulled into the story yet again.

Karpyshyn sets up Mass Effect 2 with another sci-fi paperback and two sets of downloadable content for the first Mass Effect. True to middle movie syndrome, Mass Effect 2 is a trilogy bridge. It has its own story arc, character development, climax and resolution, however, like all middle movies, after watching them for hours and hours, you’re left with as many questions at the end as you had at the beginning.

Mass Effect 3

While BioWare has so far been very quite about specific features in Mass Effect 3, they have been very vocal on their attempts to ensure that fan opinions influence their development process. Case in point is a presentation Christina Norman (Lead Game Designer) posted on Prezi (http://prezi.com/6xe1ucvy8egf/where-did-my-inventory-go/). In it, she explains how the development team took the good and bad from Mass Effect to make the second game that much better. They have a philosophy that there are no sacred cows. Everything is questioned.

So how do they question things? They poured over forums, they conducted focus groups, they monitored fan community comments, but most importantly they watched how people played the game. BioWare literally recorded tons of non-personal data about how gamers played through Mass Effect 2. When you connected to their servers, they learned how many times you played through the game, what quests you accomplished, whether or not you customized Shepard’s clothing and what achievements you received. This allowed them to build out areas of the game where most people spent a lot of time. Unfortunately for some, this also means, they’re likely to axe areas of the game you might have enjoyed but other gamers didn’t.

We have all heard in disbelief that Mass Effect 3 will have over 1,000 variations depending on the choices made in the first two Mass Effects. Now, the skeptic would say, “I didn’t see any of my choices from Mass Effect change anything major in Mass Effect 2.” The skeptic would probably point to the Horizon encounter in the original Mass Effect with Kaiden/Ahsley and say, “It doesn’t matter which I save, they are the same character and replace each other.”

Yet consider this, dear skeptic: BioWare had to keep Mass Effect 2 somewhat tight to have any realistic chance of starting Mass Effect 3 cohesively. For the upcoming Mass Effect game, BioWare doesn’t have to worry about setting up a cohesive start to Mass Effect 4. They truly can explore story variations to their conclusion. And one quick side note, don’t expect Mass Effect 4. At least not until the gaming industry hits the same creative roadblock that movies have hit and the only thing left to do is resurrect old brands. I’d guess we’ll have 3 more Alien movies, a couple more Indiana Jones adventures and at least a dozen Bring It On movies before we start hearing rumors of Mass Effect 4.

Before we get to our five predictions, lets talk about the one feature everybody wants and nobody gets. We hate to break it to you, but there will not be space combat in Mass Effect 3. BioWare has not come out and said this officially, but it’s not going to happen. We’d all like to see it, but that’s not the horse BioWare is going to ride. Space battles require an engine that could handle it. Maybe there will be a small in-game nod to fans pleading for space battles, (an arcade in the Citadel with a space blaster game) but it’s not going to happen on the scale we all want.

The Predictions

So now for our official, informed, expert and completely speculative predictions!

1. Mass Effect 3 is destined for a January 2012 release

The Dev Team has told us that Mass Effect 3 will be released either late 2011 or early 2012. Ray Muzyka stated that they want to “maximize the quality [of ME3] for our fans and maximize the commercial success for the company”. By maximize commercial success they mean, “Our fans will have lots of Christmas gift cards.” So our safest prediction is a January 2012 release date.

2. Team Division

Face it, the team conflict train has left the station and it ain’t coming back. And since we expect Mass Effect 3 will increase the size of your team, the juicy opportunities for back stabbing will be far to tempting for the developers. Did we say the team size will expand? Sure did, so expect at least half of the cast from Mass Effect 2 to return (if they survived the Suicide Mission, that is), some of the folks from the original, and a handful of new ones.

Now about that conflict..you’d better start preparing your apologies now because your love interest from the original Mass Effect is going to call you out for cheating in Mass Effect 2. Emotions will be flying so high, you’ll have to tip toe past some rooms. There are enough conflicting interests in the game to start a nuclear war inside the new Normandy (more on that later).

Relationally speaking, the most drama will come from Ashley Williams and Miranda Lawson [or your ME1/ME2 love interests of choice]. They don’t call ’em bombshells for nothing. Williams and Lawson in particular, are both beautiful, both are competitive, and both have enough insecurity to need Shepard to prop them up. Three’s a crowd in that triangle, and Shepard will more than likely choose which one to embrace and which one will die a Heroine’s death. Of course if you’re playing a female Shepard, the three of you might be best friends and have some killer intergalactic slumber parties (hello, zero gravity pillow fights!).

So what does this all mean? Don’t expect all members to stay on the team from start to finish. In Mass Effect 2, the team barely held together. So, after throwing in the characters from the original game, you’ll have too much for one commander to control.

3. Grunt and Urdnot Wrex fix their baby makers

On a more uplifting note, we anticipate a quest that will trigger a touching, right-of-passage relationship between Grunt and Urdnot Wrex as they find a cure for their sterile race. This will more than likely be a side mission that forces Shepard to decide between curing the Krogan reproduction problem or some other galactically important option.

4. BioWare plays the ‘Judas’ card

And you can count on one major, major betrayal. Let that sink in...Think about it, every epic story has betrayal. William Wallace was betrayed by Robert the Bruce, Obi-Wan was betrayed by Anakin, Frodo was betrayed by Boromir, Jesus was betrayed by Judas and Kenny is betrayed every day by the writers of South Park. The difficult thing about predicting who will be the Judas is that all the characters could betray Shepard depending on how a player plays. They each have their own passionate issues.

Here are a few scenarios to consider:
* Miranda might betray Shepard if he endangers her sister, or sense of family.
* Ashley and Garrus might betray Shepard if he sides with Cerberus.
* Grunt and Urdnot might betray Shepard if he seals the fate of the sterile Krogan race.
* Tali'Zorah could be the Judas if Shepard ruins the Quarian's chances to return to their homeland.
* Jacob could betray the team if he feels Shepard is putting the Human race in danger.
* It might be Mordin Solus if logically betrayal will lead to the greater good for the galaxy.
* It could be Legion, but I'm guessing not. That would be too obvious.

5. The old Normandy was so 2010...it gets a make-over

What’s that? A new Normandy? That’s right, we’re doubling down with all our chips to bet there’ll be a new Normandy. We’re guessing about 20% bigger to make room for the 12- to 14-member team. They also have to make some room for the new MAKO (wink, wink) – more than likely a hover-tank. Here’s a freebie prediction, they won’t go back to the straight land-exploration of Mass Effect, but it wouldn’t surprise us if they used a new MAKO to break up the action some with some mission-related functionality.

6. The Cerberus are smug lying bastards and the Illusive Man is an android.

We expect Cerberus to take off their “greater good” pretenses and Shepard must make a choice between Miranda and Jacob with Cerberus or Ashley and Garrus against Cerberus. Or perhaps that spark in the Illusive Man’s eye turns out to be synthetic and he’s using Shepard to defeat the Reapers making way for a Geth uprising. Of course the beauty of Mass Effect is that all options are possible.

7. The playthrough score will include all three games

Lastly, lets try a technical prediction for a change. We know that BioWare is working hard to cement the ties between all three games. And what better way to do this than at the end of Mass Effect 3 have the player's achievements rank based on how well you finished the ENTIRE trilogy. Players who take their time, do the exploration and complete all character quests will proudly know they’ve got nothing left to prove. Slackers will beat the game and see just how much more replay they’ve got.

Conclusion

So there you have it, if you aren't ready for Mass Effect 3...you never will be. You've re-upped on the entire history behind the series, you now know everything we know about the upcoming title (which isn't much, we admit), and lastly you've read our predictions. Think about those predictions, chew on them, let them settle in and then give us your own predictions in the comments below!]]>

BioWare prepares to announce a new game...http://www.blankgamer.com/news/175/bioware-prepares-to-announce-a-new-game

You know you're big time when you can make an announcement and gamers everywhere swoon. And that is exactly what is happening to BioWare.

BioWare just posted a video with five seconds worth of rapidly edited scenes from a new game. It's all part of an effort to hype the REAL announcement broadcasting on December 11th at Spike TV's Video Game awards. They've also posted weird bar code hints on their Twitter feed...one refers to the atomic weight of Iron, and the other is the lowest recorded temperature on Earth.

Conspiracy theorists believe that the atomic weight of Iron could refer to BioWare's old Shattered Steel game. The referenced temperature was recorded at Vostok, Antarctica...which is also a star system in Mass Effect. What does that mean? Who knows. But it would seem that BioWare isn't going to introduce a brand new series.

Bethesda reveals Fallout: New Vegas DLChttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/174/bethesda-reveals-fallout-new-vegas-dlc

Bethesda Softworks didn't waste any time getting the first downloadable content ready for Fallout: New Vegas. They've just announced that it will be called 'Dead Money' and will feature you with three NPCs hunting for the legendary lost treasure of the Sierra Madre Casino. Expect new terrain, plenty of new enemies, and even some new 'choices'. We're not sure what they mean by choices...but we're sure it will be great!

Not content to just announce the DLC for us, Bethesda Softworks also has a choice quote. “We’re pleased to give fans a chance to expand their experience in Fallout: New Vegas this December with Dead Money,” said Pete Hines, VP of PR and Marketing for Bethesda Softworks. “The release of Dead Money illustrates our commitment to creating entertaining add-on content for players to enjoy in already massive games like Fallout: New Vegas.”

It's scheduled to be released December 21, 2010 and, just like we were previously informed, it will be exclusive to the Xbox LIVE network.

Consoles eagerly anticipate a potential Diablo 3 porthttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/173/consoles-eagerly-anticipate-a-potential-diablo-3-port

So you thought you were special because you're a 'PC Gamer'? Well your haughty elitism could take a major blow, because Blizzard is seriously considering bringing Diablo 3 to those redneck console lovers.

It all started when Blizzard posted three job advertisements under the Diablo 3 category that said "the ideal candidate has prior experience in console game development...extensive knowledge of Diablo". That caused uproar among fans, and some even interpreted it as an official confirmation that the game was going to be ported.

Not so fast.

Blizzard quickly calmed the masses with the following post on the Diablo 3 community fan page.

We’re exploring a Diablo-related concept for consoles and are currently looking to fill a few senior console-related positions on the Diablo III team. As we’ve said in the past, with proper care the gameplay could suit the console platform, and we’re interested in seeing what talent out there might be interested in such a project. If you’re passionate about all things Diablo and have the requisite skill and experience, then head over to our jobs site to check out the positions and apply.

Please note that this is not an announcement of a console title. We are first and foremost developing Diablo III for Windows and Mac PCs and don’t intend to allow any possibility of a console interpretation to delay or affect the release of the game.

So what does this mean? We think Blizzard is being straight up with us...but we also think it's a matter of time before our Xbox 360 frenemies get to hack-n-slash on their beloved consoles.

Bethesda Softworks Gets a New Brother with a Dark Historyhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/168/bethesda-softworks-gets-a-new-brother-with-a-dark-history

What's with ZeniMax these days? Seems like they haven't meet a development studio they aren't interested in acquiring. The latest one to make the leap to ZeniMax land is the Sweden based company MachineGames, famous for being founded by the people who brought you The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher’s Bay and The Darkness.

The implication for gamers is ZeniMax's continued commitment to the dark action genre older gamers enjoy so much. Apparently MachineGames is working on an unannounced project for ZeniMax that uses id Software's 'id Tech 5' game engine. And by unannounced project, they really mean unannounced. No details. No release date. Nothing.

So how many companies are under the ZeniMax umbrella now? We count 5. Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, Arkane Studios, Tango Gameworks and now MachineGames. We're counting on a lot of top notch games from ZeniMax in the near future!

More Duke Nukem Forever infohttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/162/more-duke-nukem-forever-info

Games On Net posted an interview with Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, and the topic of discussion was Duke Nukem Forever. There is a lot of really good information here and we encourage fans to check it out.

Here is a sampling of what we found most interesting:
- Gearbox Software considers this the first in a series of games. They haven't put any thought into the sequels, but they confirmed that they bought the franchise with the future in mind.
- They had $20 million to invest in a brand...and they choose Duke Nukem. They sound very committed.
- They reconfirmed that it will be released on the 360 and PS3
- Richard talks about some of the game's interactivity, including a fully functioning pinball machine!

Fallout: New Vegas makes lots of moneyhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/161/fallout-new-vegas-makes-lots-of-money
Of course Bethesda Softworks is understandably happy...Vlatko Andonov, President of Bethesda Softworks, had this to say. "We are delighted by the reception Fallout: New Vegas has received from fans around the world. Despite the large launch quantities for this title, we have already received substantial re-orders from our retail partners, underscoring the tremendous popularity of this highly entertaining game. We believe Fallout: New Vegas will be the “must buy” title for gamers throughout the holiday season."

So what do you guys think? Is the game worthy of the $300 million in sales?

Killzone 3 Previewhttp://www.blankgamer.com/preview/154/killzone-3-preview

The Story

While the beta version does not have any campaign play whatsoever, anyone who has played the Killzone series knows it is the ISA versus the Helghast, a Hitler-esque race of quasi-humans who more or less hate our guts. Suffice it to say, Killzone 3 is picking up from the exact moment Killzone 2 left us. In other words, your answer to Dirty Harry's famous query had better be a wholehearted, “Why yes, yes I am feeling lucky!” Sev, controlled by you, is still back-to-back with Rico, duking it out with the world in the middle of a freshly erupted civil war within the Helghast Empire. Your main goal, barring any twists (and hopefully, unlike in the previous games in this series, there will be many), will be firstly to survive, and secondly to escape while not neglecting that pesky survival bit.

The Feel

One thing about Killzone 3 that makes it a worthy opponent to its First Person Shooter competitors is the physics of the game. Walking around is even more realistic than, say Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. You shift from left to right with each step, which is really a nice touch. When you turn quickly, much as in real life, your vision will blur slightly. This was the first thing that caught our attention when we started the game.

They put a good amount of detail into the environment. The snow falling is far more than the white blobs of yesteryear. If you cap an enemy on a snowy slope, their body will slide down to its resting place on a more level plane, where you can put the player, writhing in agony, out of his or her misery with the butt of your gun.

The guns will have about as much kick in the game as they do when you hold the physical weapon in your hands, which is impressive. It is not always about ruining your accuracy, either; they are completely fair about it. For instance, a light machine gun will not have very much recoil at all because, despite the title, those suckers are actually pretty heavy. On the flip side, trying to snipe with a pistol takes a ridiculous amount of concentration...and if you are lucky, you might put a couple slugs in your target.

The Classes

One thing that makes any FPS worth its salt (and the $70 you probably shelled out for it) is the class system in multiplayer mode. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has its customizable classes in which you have to unlock different weaponry and skillsets. Battlefield has preset classes, each with their pros and cons. We really like what Killzone does here; they kind of create a cross between the two. There are five classes, each with so many weapons and skills to choose from. Here is the catch (and what differentiates it from both its competitors and its predecessors): you can start as any class, but you have to unlock the different weapons and abilities. Nobody starts with a secondary weapon, and everyone has frag grenades and proximity mines available to them. The additional perks that any class can have are Armor (take less damage), Extra Health (start with extra health), Extra Ammo (start with extra ammunition), and Extra Primary Weapon (secondary weapon is replaced with a primary weapon).

Engineer
The abilities, much like in Killzone 2, are that of creating up to three turrets anywhere at any given time, and repairing anything, whether it be a turret or an ammo resupply stash. Eventually, you can even steal enemy turrets. You start out not with a shotgun, but a light machine gun, and can eventually unlock a variety of LMGs. The secondary weapons are a pistol, a shotgun pistol, and a battle pistol (which fires grenades!).

Marksman
The Marksman has some pretty awesome abilities. You can activate the cloak, which will eventually make you invisible unless you kill someone (and you are slightly visible if you move around or fire). Additionally, you can eventually scramble anyone's radar who comes within fifteen meters of you and not show up on radar either when you fire or when a tactician activates their spy radar. You start off with a semi-automatic rifle. You can unlock an SMG and sniper rifle as your primary weapon and a pistol, shotgun pistol, and machine pistol as your secondary weapon.

Tactician
This class is just a pure joy to play. You start out with an SMG, and eventually unlock an LMG and a semi-automatic rifle. Secondaries consist of a pistol, a revolver, and a rather intimidating missile launcher. You have two abilities: call in bots to autonomously fly around and fire on the enemies, and activate a spy radar so you can see where the enemies are on your regular radar. Additionally, you can also capture tactical spawning points, which proves indispensable in some game modes.

Infiltrator
The ninjas out there will be in love with this class. Your ability is to pose as the opposing team. It can create a massive amount of confusion as you watch a supposed team member take your face into their hands and snap your neck. Another nice thing is that you have additional stamina, which is invaluable when attempting to confuse the other team. There is nothing worse than running to stealthily melee someone and suddenly they can see that you are an enemy because you are unable to run anymore. This class starts off with a rather weak shotgun, but you can unlock an SMG and an assault rifle. Your secondary weapons will be a pistol, a battle pistol, and a rocket launcher.

Field Medic
This is potentially the biggest team player class. Your two abilities are to heal (and coincidentally resupply) both your teammates and yourself, and eventually to create Medi-Droids to accompany you until death. Did I mention you can respawn where you died with full ammunition and health? The Medic will start off with an SMG and unlock both a shotgun and an assault rifle. The backups are a pistol, a revolver, and a machine pistol.

The Weapons

As you may have gathered from the brief overview of weaponry in the description of the classes, the variety is sorely lacking, which is really pretty much unforgivable in a modern shooting game. Compiled below is a list of all of the weapons previously mentioned along with the in-game description of each.

Primary Weapons:
M224-1A LMG
- Friend to bunkered soldiers everywhere, the LMG's iron sights and large clip size will make the enemy think twice before storming any position.
STA11 SMG
- No other automatic weapon is better suited to close-range, in-your-face encounters than the StA11.
STA3 LMG
- Accuracy is overrated. The StA3's high rate of fire and large clip size will clear out a room in seconds. A formidable close-range weapon.
STA14 Rifle
- A scoped semi-automatic rifle capable of felling most targets before they can get near you.
LS13 Shotgun
- The LS13 is a powerful semi-automatic shotgun equipped with a reflex scope. Whatever this hits stays dead.
VC32 Sniper Rifle
- With a long-range zoom (UP on D-Pad) and high accuracy, this rifle is capable of felling most foes in a single shot.
STA52 Assault Rifle
- Standard Helghast issued assault rifle equipped with reflex scope. Sturdy, easy to use and ideal for just about any combat situation.
M82 Assault Rifle
- Standard issue to all ISA combatants, the assault rifle is well-suited to most combat situations. Equipped with a reflex scope, this weapon is deadly in the hands of an experienced soldier.

Secondary Weapons:
STA18 Pistol
- Standard issue semi-automatic pistol.
VC8 Shotgun Pistol
- The best weapon for a close-quarters fight, nothing says ‘up close and personal’ like the VC8.
STA2 Battle Pistol
- Increases grenade storage capacity and fires grenades farther than a soldier could ever throw.
M66 Machine Pistol
- Equipped with a reflex scope and a silencer, the machine pistol is an ideal weapon for close-range, surprise encounters.
M4 Revolver
- One shot will severely cripple an enemy, or kill a wounded one.
VC9 Missile Launcher
- Capable of destroying turrets and drones in a single shot, the VC9 missile launcher is the very definition of an anti-armor weapon.

Explosives:
M194 Frag Grenade
Proximity Mine

The Modes

There are three different multiplayer game modes: Guerrilla Warfare, Warzone, and Operations. You might recognize Guerrilla Warfare as Team Deathmatch in virtually every other FPS. You are thrown into squads of either ISA or Helghast and you essentially have to kill so many of the other faction. There is not much to explain here. If you are still scratching your head, you may want to select a different genre of gaming altogether.

Warzone is kind of fun. You are given five missions to complete in a randomized order, and each must be completed within a predetermined time frame. You will have to assassinate someone or defend someone from assassination (Assassination), see how many kills you can rack up of the opposite faction (Body Count), capture and defend as many of the three designated regions in each level for as long as possible (Capture & Hold), plant explosives at certain points on the map or keep others from planting them (Search & Destroy), and finally a capture-the-flag type mission where the flag is actually a propaganda speaker and only one of them exists at a time and is up for grabs (Search & Retrieve).

Operations is basically a simple offense/defense set of games. Like Warzone, you are given so many missions to complete, but you are either on offense or defense for these missions, and there are only three of them. Two are borrowed from Warzone: Capture & Hold and Search & Destroy. The third is called Scavenge & Retrieve, which is an interesting (but somewhat incoherent) blend of Capture & Hold and Search & Retrieve. Basically, it is potentially two stages, where the first stage is a game of Capture & Hold and the second is a game of Search & Retrieve.

What's New

There are several things that are apparently new with Killzone 3, and some of the features leave us scratching our collective heads as to why it was never implemented in the earlier titles.

Jetpacks are not exactly new, but the first ones do not exactly count, as they were only existent on the handheld system, so they could not really be used to their full potential. Jetpacks are only available on one level in the beta game, but are pretty fun to use. You have to activate it by hitting down on your D-pad, then you can use its automatic gun with no scope and fly up high, via what's normally the crouch controls, to hit that perfect sniping spot. An entire team with jetpacks is virtually unstoppable, which will undoubtedly lead to much frustration with noobs. It is more or less Halo's energy sword – everyone hates people who use it, but it is really fun to use every now and then! In actuality, it is more comparable to the Banshee in Halo with its flying capabilities, and by extension, vulnerabilities.

I do not know why Guerrilla Games thought it would be a good idea to make the controls completely different from every major FPS. Honestly, this was a big issue with Borderlands, and they can only hurt themselves by doing the same thing with Killzone. Thankfully, you are able to switch to an alternate layout in the options menu.

The point system is different. Instead of a 1:1 ratio for kills to points, the scale is much higher. You now get 100 points for a kill, 25 for an assist, and 50 for a destroyed bot/turret.

You get ribbons for your in-game accomplishments, such as Silent Footsteps or Faster Reload. This is not a new feature itself, but there are many different ribbons in Killzone 3 than were featured in its predecessors.

Summary

This game is essentially a cross between Unreal Tournament and Battlefield. The Halo killer it was hailed to be with the release of the first title of its series might have been somewhat of an exaggeration, but it is a solid FPS, and it is definitely worth investing more than a few hours in. The replayability may be effected by the fact that, in an era of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Borderlands, you can max out all of your classes...but unless you are taking some time off of work to play this on a regular basis (or, let's be honest, trying to convince your mom that you really are too sick to go to school), it will probably be a while before you wear this game out. For future titles Guerrilla Games would do well to practice -- if not some copycatting of modern comparable games -- some real innovation. They might just be relying too heavily on this game supporting both 3D televisions and the new Playstation Move controller.]]>

Medal of Honor gets dissed by EAhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/158/medal-of-honor-gets-dissed-by-ea

Patrick Soderlund, of EA, let it all hang out when he told Eurogamer that the Medal of Honor reboot "...didn't meet our quality expectations." Which is interesting, since he then goes on to criticize reviewers for giving the game poor ratings.

Look Mr. Soderlund, you can't expect to release sub par quality games AND get great reviews... you're no John Romero! And haven't you been in the news a lot lately, sir? Didn't you just spill the beans on the PSP2?

We're guessing that after giving the slip on the PSP2 and dissing his own game in the same week...no one will say "Thank god it's Friday!" with as much gusto as Patrick Soderlund.

Maybe he just doesn't care, or maybe he is sacrificing the Man's PR lip service for his honest opinion... if that's the case, here's to you Mr. Soderlund! May your "war against the Man" be an example for all of us.

So there you have it folks, just one more confirmation that the PSP2 is well on its way to your filthy little hands.

John Carmack talks all about RAGE on iOShttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/155/john-carmack-talks-all-about-rage-on-ios

John Carmack is a gaming god. There is no other way to describe him. So when he speaks, we listen... and he just spoke a lot about RAGE on the iOS.

His post, as usual, is very technical in regard to the development of the game. But even if 'geek-speak' isn't your thing, you should be fascinated by the details on what RAGE is going to be like on iOS. Here's a hint: it won't be a straight port.

While he doesn't mention it in this post, Mr. Carmack has since tweeted that RAGE WILL show up on the Android but it will NOT show up on Windows Mobile 7. Something about how C++ is not supported on that platform or...well...we don't really know, we stopped paying attention once he mentioned Windows Mobile 7.

Duke Nukem Forever Interviewhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/132/duke-nukem-forever-interview

Joystiq has posted an interview with 2K Games senior producer Melissa Miller regarding the mythical Duke Nukem Forever. There are a handful of interesting tidbits, the best of which are:

- There are three developers currently involved with the game: Gearbox, Triptych Games and Piranha Games
- Triptych Games was founded by nine former employees of 3D Realms, including Allen Blum.
- At this point everyone is primarily focused on polishing the game.
- They are still on track for a 2011 release.
- And lastly, "George Broussard and Scott Miller are not actively involved on the project." That IS interesting...we wonder how painful it is for Broussard to hand over his baby?

We'll continue to keep you posted on this game!

PlayStation Phone for real?!?http://www.blankgamer.com/news/129/playstation-phone-for-real

Engadget first broke this news yesterday, but we've waited 12 hours to post this in order to let the "it's a fake" claims die down. And they have.

Engadget has uploaded a collection of pictures of what they vehemently claim is the upcoming PlayStation Phone, a collaboration between Sony and Google. It will feature Android 3.0 and a "1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches."

Reports are that the phone will have a custom marketplace, designed and maintained by Sony for...you guessed it, games. Because the phone is apparently still in the design phase, Engadget believes that it will be released in 2011.

We've only posted one picture of the device, use the source link to see the rest at Engadget!

Microsoft plans to "double down" on PC gaminghttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/128/microsoft-plans-to-quotdouble-downquot-on-pc-gaming

We knew that Microsoft was throwing down the challenge to Steam when they announced their take on an online digital store for Windows games last week. What we didn't know is that this was just the first move in an attempt to re-focus on PC gaming.

In an interview with Kotaku, Peter Orullian of Microsoft said that the company was planning to bring some of its success from the console market over to PCs. "PC games," he said. "is a place where we are doubling down."

This could be the best news all year for computer gamers...that's saying something since it's been a great year for computer games so far. On the other hand, this might be just another gust of hot air from a company that has been known for its fair share of empty promises.

Here's hoping for the best!

Diablo 3 details from BlizzConhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/127/diablo-3-details-from-blizzcon

When Blizzard employees weren't thumping their chests (and calling gamers geeks), they were giving us tasty morsels about Diablo 3. We've put together a list of the most promising and most important items for your viewing pleasure.

Diablo 3:
- There will be a beta before the game is released and Blizzard promised that 1,000 of the lucky attendees would get access codes.
- The fifth character class is the Demon Hunter, which we feel is appropriate for this game.
- The Demon Hunter will focus on ranged weapons and dark magic. Oh, and this class can use grenades...awesome.
- There will be PvP fighting in arenas.
- Gold will be a scarce resource in this game. Developers felt that there was far too much gold in Diablo 2.
- In-game player trading has been revamped for simplicity.

BlizzCon to reveal Diablo 3 release date?http://www.blankgamer.com/news/126/blizzcon-to-reveal-diablo-3-release-date

So BlizzCon starts tomorrow and, as usual, everyone with an official title is casting their votes for what announcements we can expect. It shouldn't be a surprise that most of these votes involve some sort of tidbit about Diablo 3. After all, Diablo 3 game director Jay Wilson did tell us, "I can say that this BlizzCon, in terms of Diablo news, will be the biggest one that we’ve ever had." That sounds very promising!

One of these characters with an official title is Colin Sebastian, an analyst employed by Lazard Capital. He's placing his street cred on the line by proudly predicting Blizzard will use BlizzCon to announce a release date of mid to late 2011.

By our calculations Mr. Sebastian is casting a fairly wild net...six months wide to be exact. Our semi-official stance is that Blizzard will not give a release date at BlizzCon, but we don't have official titles or make official title salary. So here's to you, Mr. Sebastian! May your crystal ball prove more accurate than we expect!

Fallout: New Vegas DLC will be a 360 exclusivehttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/121/fallout-new-vegas-dlc-will-be-a-360-exclusive

Bethesda Softworks isn't taking long to pump out the download-able content for Fallout: New Vegas. Even though the game still hasn't been released, they've confirmed that game add-ons will be available this holiday season and they will only be available on Xbox Live.

“Bethesda set a high bar with the quality of the Fallout game add-ons,” said Matt Barlow, General Manager, IEB Product Marketing for Microsoft. “We have no doubt that gamers will be thrilled with seeing a new add-on pack extend their adventures with Fallout: New Vegas on Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE.”

Will the PS3 and PC gamers see this same content? We don't know and Bethesda won't say. Though it's probably a safe bet that they will, sometime in the future.

Two seconds of Apple ad opens gamer's eyeshttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/118/two-seconds-of-apple-ad-opens-gamers-eyes

The new Apple iPhone ad contains about two seconds of Epic's new, Citadel Tech Demo based game. What's pertinent is that we get a brief glimpse of in-game characters and combat. And while the control system isn't shown, the in-game graphics are absolutely stunning. The day when we can play Oblivion on our cellphones may have finally arrived.

Gears of War 3 delayed and getting multiplayer demohttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/117/gears-of-war-3-delayed-and-getting-multiplayer-demo

Gears 3 has gotten some intense coverage lately...that's what happens when the developer hosts a preview event.

So what's the big news? Well, first the game is being postponed till the 2011 holiday season. Bummer. But the good news is that Epic Games will host a public beta of the multiplayer function. This is a first public beta for the series and will be used to discover any hosting bugs in the game.

Because public betas are... well... public, we can expect the look and feel of the beta to be polished and near, if not the actual, final design. Gamers are a fickle group and any glaring errors in the beta, even though it is labeled as a beta, will impact sales.

Duke Nukem Forever gameplay videohttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/116/duke-nukem-forever-gameplay-video

We've got a video that once again proves the old adage, "If you demo it, they will youtube it", and this time the demoed product is Duke Nukem Forever. Looks like someone attended the press demonstration, whipped out their cell phone and recorded the whole thing, and onto YouTube it went. It features a giant, one-eyed monster, the ability to interact with a urinal, an obscene drawing on a white board, and lots of melodious voice-overs from Jon St. John (aka Duke Nukem).

If you didn't gather this from the previous sentence...the video isn't safe for kids.

Myst movie is one step closer to realityhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/114/myst-movie-is-one-step-closer-to-reality

We've been thinking, since it looks like Duke Nukem Forever will actually be released why not revisit the long rumored Myst movie. Apparently we weren't the only one with these thoughts, as Variety is reporting that the Myst movie IS coming and that Roserock Films and Gran Via Productions are teaming to produce it.

Adrian Vanderbosch and Isaac Testerman of Mysteria Film Group will also be involved in the project since they actually own the rights. They are very excited about the project and plan on sticking as close to the source material as possible. "Our aim with this project is to stretch the genres it operates within, much like the source material did," Vanderbosch said. "It is such an innovative property and the best service we can do to it is to maintain that spirit. By utilizing the novels as our primary source, we have the opportunity to offer audiences the essence of Myst without being limited only to the famous island of the first game."

It looks like 90's PC gaming is back in business!

Batman: Arkham City gets updated detective modehttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/113/batman-arkham-city-gets-updated-detective-mode

Well the Batman news keeps pouring in from PSM3. Not only will the gameplay combine both open world and linear gameplay, it also will feature a revamped detective mode.

Sefton Hill (that wily informer of all things Batman: Arkham City) says, "As with nearly every area of the game we’re enhancing it. One example is the criminal database coupled with the new interrogation mechanic. The Riddler continues to taunt the Dark Knight with mind-bending puzzles and exploration challenges, but the location of his biggest secrets are known only to him and people he’s told. Rather than unlocking their locations using maps, Batman will be able to scan a gang of thugs to find a potential informant."

Mr. Hill goes on to warn us that detective mode won't be just about joyfully beating the snot out of criminals. Apparently you'll need to show extra care not to kill the informants when you dial up those Freeflow combo attacks. Sounds like fun...or, depending how much control you have over the combos, maybe just frustrating.

Original Wing Commander could be free?http://www.blankgamer.com/news/110/original-wing-commander-could-be-free

This is perfect timing! We just gave Wing Commander the award for best game of 1990 and now we hear that it might end up being free for the masses.

Paul Barnett, at EA's BioWare, has posted a series of tweets detailing his plan to get EA to release the original Wing Commander as a free download. His last tweet was "my plan is wing commander one , drm free and security bypassed. For FREE ( fingers crossed)". You can follow him at http://twitter.com/thatbarnettblok

More power to you Mr. Barnett. We have always said that a world where Wing Commander was available to all people is the type of world we want to live in.

Batman: Arkham City both open world and linear...Universe to implode.http://www.blankgamer.com/news/108/batman-arkham-city-both-open-world-and-linearuniverse-to

Sefton Hall, the game director for Batman: Arkham City, wants to have his cake and eat it, too. In an interview with PSM3, when asked whether the game would feature an open-world or linear environment, he had this to say:

"We don't want to define Arkham City as an open world or linear experience. While the backbone is still the strong main narrative, there'll also be many character-driven sub-plots to reward gamers who explore the streets...So overall, there are elements of both a linear story and more open world adventure. I believe this combination will give the game a completely unique feel while remaining unmistakably authentic to Batman."

Of course every game director would like to imagine that their pet project will do what no other game has accomplished: provide an explorable world without sacrificing a concise, story-driven plot. Still, with how incredible it's prequel was, one has to imagine that if anybody can do this, it would be the guys at Rocksteady Studios.

Diablo 3 not that complexhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/109/diablo-3-not-that-complex

Blizzard's Jay Wilson has admitted in an interview to CVG that Diablo 3 will not be "more complex" than Diablo 2. He counter-balanced this by saying that there will be more items, improved fighting, and a heavier emphasis on the storyline.

So what does this mean? Essentially, Blizzard is trying very hard to flesh out the Diablo universe without actually changing the experience. It's the old "don't fix what isn't broken" mentality...which isn't a bad thing.

There was also a bizarre comment from Jason about how the team is focused on seven pillars of design, but he couldn't remember what they were. Shouldn't the lead designer know these things? Does the above picture reflect our confusion? We thought so.

IGN posted an interview with Microsoft Game Studio's Vice President Phil Spencer in which he hints that they want to release a new Halo game every year... at least that's our take on the following quote.

"There's no explicit strategy that says we're to ship a Halo game every year," said Phil. "I will say I think one Halo game every three years -- which was kind of our old cadence – is probably not frequent enough."

So will an annual Halo game water down the series? Is it even possible to do this now that Bungie has left the company? Guess we'll find out soon enough!

We Love 90s PC Games: 1990http://www.blankgamer.com/feature/88/we-love-90s-pc-games-1990
Click on through and remember PC gaming at its best!

It was the end of the Cold War, the beginning of the Gulf War. It was the year Jim Henson, Ava Gardner, and Sammy Davis Jr died. It was the first year of the greatest decade of PC Games we've ever seen and probably will ever see.

We love PC Games. This platform has the best role-playing, adventure, real-time strategy, and 3D games. The platform lends itself to genres with complex control schemes...and so while plenty of these games have been ported to consoles, they just aren't the same. And we haven't even mentioned the massive multiplayer games, which owe everything they have to the PC.

But the PC's biggest asset is also its Achilles heel. Computers can be upgraded faster and easier than any console could hope for. And yet that constant upward mobility in hardware also means that gaming on the computer is far more expensive than on a console.

The 90's glory days of PC gaming are over, though the platform isn't nearly as dead as some would have you believe. Now more than ten years out, we think it's about time for a healthy dose of nostalgia! This is a top ten list of incredible games...and we spent a lot of time analyzing these rankings. A lot of you probably don't agree, and we don't really care because it's our list and this is how we remember 1990.

10. Pharaoh's Tomb

Developed by George Broussard (or is it Broussad?)and published by Apogee, Pharaoh’s Tomb was released during the glory days of shareware. A game almost as famous for its developer misspelling his own name as for its gameplay, Pharaoh’s Tomb is an incredibly difficult game. Most of that difficulty can be attributed to the instant death of your character anytime you touched a trap, enemy, etc.

Designed with Indiana Jones in mind, Nevada Smith is an assistant with a grudge. Tired of being left off the fun trips, he steals a treasure map from the professor he helps...and the rest, as they say, is history.

A basic puzzle game, you start with five lives and a handful of spears and a little courage. With care and precision you must navigate labyrinth-like pyramids, avoiding the booby traps and predictable enemies. By predictable, we mean that they move from point A to point B over and over and over. So the key to winning is timing.

One odd design is that enemies are displayed with bounding boxes. What this means is that you have to imagine a box around the enemy if you don’t want it to touch you, and you don’t. You young whippersnappers may not remember games like that, but such are the difficulties of the old days when games had to be played with punch cards...while it was snowing.

9. Eye of the Beholder

SSI use to be one of our favorite companies. Although they had the tendency to get greedy and go for quantity over quality, they still put out some of the best strategy and role-playing games of all time. They were particularly well known in the 1980s when they purchased the video game license for Advanced Dungeon and Dragons, which was the inspiration for Eye of the Beholder. Because it was published by SSI and developed by Westwood Studies, you might think Eye of the Beholder is one of those typical early ‘90s RPG clones made by now-defunct companies. Well the company might have tanked, but this game was an absolute gem.

To set the stage, the city of Waterdeep has a major problem - there is something evil rising up beneath it and they need someone to take care of it. So they commission a band of adventurers to go down into their sewers in pursuit. No sooner do they enter the sewers than the tunnel collapses and their only way forward is down into dark... this is where you come in. After making your way through the sewer you find a dwarf city, then a drow (that’s dark elves for the none AD&D people) city, and then finally the lair of the evil beholder. If all goes well, you successfully defeat the beholder and emerge from the underworld as a hero. Ok, so the storyline is the weakest part of the game.

A first-person dungeon crawler, Eye of the Beholder was one of the first RPGs with a point-and-click interface that was simple to use. It was also non-linear in that you could retrace your steps, take multiple paths, and skip entire levels. But the most impressive part was how engaging the creepy atmosphere was, due to the superb graphics and music. Heck, we can still remember the haunting sounds of monsters just out of sight.

8. Commander Keen

Ever heard of that company id Software? The one that made Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake? Oh, you didn’t realize they made 2D platformers that seemed geared more towards kids than gamers? Maybe it’s because their name was spelled ID Software at the time, but whatever the reason you’ve missed out one of PC Gaming’s legendary series.

Back in the late 80’s the guys who would eventually become id Software discovered a neat little trick that would allow platformers to smoothly scroll on PCs. They decided to create complete clone of Super Mario Brothers 3 with the hopes that Nintendo would pay them to port them over to the PC. Of course, that dream had about as much chance of succeeding as pigs do of flying and even though they received a hearty clap on the back from Nintendo, the guys were on their own. Fortunately, Apogee (that mega shareware company from the earlier 90s) saw the potential and after an initial investment of $2000 and three months of hard work by id, the rest of the world had Commander Keen.

Commander Keen was an episodic cartoonish side-scroller heavy on humor. The episodes featured references to relevant pop-culture, slapstick humor (such as mooning the player), and even introduced everyone to the infamous dopefish, which is the second dumbest creature in the universe. The game features an eight year-old boy named Billy Blaze who creates his own spaceship out of common household objects. Using this spaceship he travels around the galaxy fighting Vorticons and saving our planet with the help of rayguns, a pogo stick and flower power...although not always all at the same time.

Strangely enough, one of our strongest memories from this series is the built-in Pong game called Paddle War. It was accessed through Keen’s wrist watch.

7. Red Baron

Once upon a time people actually played games with a joystick (please keep your minds on the subject at hand...darn it). Yes this was an era when a flight simulator was actually appreciated, evidenced by the two flight simulators on our list. And while Wing Commander (the second flight simulator on our list) was the master of space flight, Red Baron was master of our own planet’s fair atmosphere.

Developed by Dynamix and published by Sierra Entertainment, Red Baron takes place during World War I and as the name implies, involves a lot of either flying with or against the famous Red Baron. The game’s gem was a griping campaign mode which allowed the player to work their way up to a decorated ace throughout World War I. Just like in Wing Commander, performance affected gameplay. The better your performance, the better the squadron you were assigned and the better the aces you would confront. As the war progressed, aircraft got better and less susceptible to the annoying technical glitches of that era, which included gun jams and failing instrument panels. One cool feature was that if you were shot down, you would either spend months recovering in either a friendly hospital or trying to escape an enemy POW camp. Once you returned to flying you could suddenly be thrust into new technology as the timeline of the game had advanced while you were detained.

They don’t make flight simulators like this anymore...in fact they really don’t make flight simulators anymore. We think that's a real shame, and it isn’t just because we have a collection of expensive Logitech joysticks collecting dust.

6. King’s Quest V

The King’s Quest series was already well established by this time, which is obvious from the V at the end of it’s name. But what had been a silent and type-driven series suddenly jumped into the modern 256-color point and click ‘talkie’ era. And what a worthwhile jump that was.

The storyline goes something like this. King Graham is out walking one day when an evil cloaked figure uses a whirlwind to make the King’s castle disappear. When King Graham returns to the scene of the crime, he meets a talking owl who not only explains what happened but also takes him to meet a good wizard who provides the King with everything he needs to reclaim his castle and his family. And that is pretty much it. Oh, there are little details here and there, but the vast majority of the game is spent searching for the evil wizard and defeating him.

What can we say about this game? It was great because it took the solid storyline, gameplay and puzzles of the previous games and upgraded all of the technical aspects. As long as you could ignore that annoying owl with his constant babbling, you were in good shape!

5. Loom

You know that we’re in the midst of LucasArt’s glory days when they have two games mentioned in our top ten list and neither of them are about Star Wars. Loom is one of the company’s best adventure games and comes with a unique gameplay and in-depth storyline, as evidenced by the 30 minute audio introduction.

The gist of the storyline is this. You play the character Bobbin, who was unexpectedly and illegally created by the Loom. The Loom is a giant machine which is used to weave "subtle patterns of influence into the very fabric of reality" by the Guild of Weavers. Because Bobbin is an unwanted member of society, his mother and caretaker are turned into swans as punishment. Bobbin, who has been taught to play tunes on his distaff, must leave the Guild to fend for himself. He decides to find the flock of swans who have been trying to save the world from the evil Third Shadow. One thing leads to another and, before you know it, he is fighting a being called ‘Chaos’ who has entered the world through the torn fabric of the Universe. It’s pretty complicated.

This is a really rough attempt at summarizing Loom’s storyline, but you get the idea of how in-depth it was.

What made Loom so unique was that most actions were performed by playing tunes on the distaff, the only item your character was allowed to carry. On the most difficult modes this was performed by ear...not a game for the tone deaf. All puzzles were solved by playing a tune that you had learned and memorized. Loom was also the first game to follow the design that the player could never be killed or forced to restart...a marked contrast from Sierra’s products.

In an era of adventure games, Loom stood out because it was unique.

4. Sid Meier’s Railroad Tycoon

Who have thought that a game dealing entirely with running a railroad company would be any fun? Apparently, Sid Meier did. And if we’ve learned only one thing in the last 20 years, it's that if Sid Meier thinks it would make a good game, it's going to be a good game.

Railroad Tycoon is, at its heart, a standard business simulation. You build stations and lay track, choosing the paths that will allow the quickest and most efficient deliveries. Trains can carry mail or other commodities which are chosen based on supply and demand. There is also a stock market simulator where you can trade either your own or your competitor’s stock. The game lasts for 100 years and at the end success is determined by your company's assets. If you do well enough you can even become the President!

The gameplay could be summed up in three words: speed and stocks. From beginning to end, you focused on developing the fastest trains and routes possible. As the game progressed you were able to upgrade or modify your trains in order to increase that route speed. The stock market was also a lot of fun to play with. You could use company money to conduct buyouts or even fund rate wars.

Gaming history is replete with Sid Meier gems and while the strategy genre has morphed far beyond Railroad Tycoon, in its time it was the pinnacle of what the market had to offer.

3. The Secret of Monkey Island

They don’t make flight simulators anymore and they don’t make adventure games anymore. Which is a real stinking shame, because adventure games were simple, beautiful, and aggravatingly difficult to play. Ok, maybe there is a reason they don’t make adventure games anymore.

You played the part of Guybrush Threepwood, an aspiring young pirate who must prove himself worthy through three terrible challenges. Speaking of Guybrush Threepwood, what is it with adventure game character’s names? Only in this genre will you find a hermit with the last name Toothrot and a heroine with the last name Firmflanks. Ok enough of that. While completing the challenges, Guybrush encounters a beautiful lady named Elaine whom he falls in love with, but unfortunately the ghost of the dead pirate LeChuck is also in love with her...and you can imagine that doesn’t go over well with him. One thing leads to another and before you know it Elaine is kidnapped, forced to marry the ghost pirate, rescued by Guybrush (really she kind of saves herself) and then watches as Guybrush fights and destroys the pirate with an exploding bottle of root beer.

The Secret of Monkey Island was one of the most successful of LucasArt’s adventure games - heck they even released a version for iOS! It relied heavily on comedic dialogue, as was typical with LucasArt’s adventure games.

2. Prince of Persia

When your top ten list involves games released more than two decades ago, they can’t just be good games they have to be industry-changing games. Prince of Persia fits that criteria perfectly. Developed by Jordan Mechner and published by Broderbund, Prince of Persia is famous for introducing close-combat and life-like animation to the platform genre. And if you thought this game was released in 1989, you’d be right. But that was for the Apple II which means no one else saw it till 1990...that’s how we’re counting it!

The premise of the game is that your character (who looks remarkably anglo-saxon for Persia), has attracted the eye of the Princess, much to the chagrin of Jaffar (must all Persian stories include a Jaffar?). In one vicious cutscene, Jaffar issues an ultimatum to a house-arrested Princess...marry him within the hour or die. The Princess throws all her hope into your character who, unfortunately, has been thrown into prison by Jaffar. The game starts with your character stuck in a prison cell. Within one literal hour you must escape your cell, find a sword, defeat countless guards, defeat Jaffar and rescue the princess and the kingdom at the same time.

The game was simple but clever. It contained well designed puzzles, where even failure was rewarded with gruesome death animations. You also fought with a sword which you could use to both attack and parry, which provided a sense of strategy that was missing in the typical shoot and dodge mechanics of platformers of that time. But probably most important were the innovative character animations. While developing the game, Mechner video-taped his brother performing various actions (jumping, running, slicing, dodging, etc) and than frame-by-frame he traced his brother’s movements to create the animations found in the game. The result was spectacular.

Prince of Persia, along with its sequel, was one of our favorite games. In a day when games were simpler and adventure was valued higher than action, this game was one of the best. But playing this game wasn’t all roses, just hearing the game’s name brings back vivid memories of how frustratingly difficult it was to solve some of those puzzles and time the jumps. Oh, and you really didn't need to go exploring for that sword in the first level...apparently there was one hiding in the stairway leading to level 2. Who would have known.

1. Wing Commander

It’s easy to write off this series if you’ve only seen the craptastic movie, but the original Wing Commander was a remarkable breakthrough in technology and a damn fine game. Designed by Chris Roberts and developed/published by Origin Systems, Wing Commander brought space simulators to the masses. It combined gorgeous graphics and gripping storyline with an innovative gameplay system.

Wing Commander threw us into the middle of a massive galatic war with the Kilrathi, the cat-people players loved to hate and the series' main protagonists. They were vicious, aggressive, and they would insult you during gameplay. We also met a group of fellow crewman who fought along side us. Each crew member had unique personalities and you felt torn when they died because you failed to support them. I still remember replaying one level multiple times just so that I could keep Angel alive. She was nice, helpful, and hot in that pixelated sort of way. And there was also Maniac who was a bit of a competitor, kinda scary, and who would eventually have a mental breakdown. Sounds like a dependable wingman, right?

One of the game’s most endearing aspects was how the storyline was dependent on gameplay success. Each mission would reflect the successes or failures in the previous missions. If you repeatedly failed missions, your crew and mothership would begin retreating and if you didn’t turn things around, you would eventually lose the game. This design might seem obvious in this day and age, but at that time there weren’t many action games that had attempted to implement this, never mind succeeding.

Wing Commander was the unanimous number one pick for all of us. Its legacy not only created and shaped multiple genres but it also birthed one of the greatest series gaming as ever seen. Almost every title that bore the Wing Commander name was excellent, including the amazing Privateer spin-off. The series would be practically perfect if it hadn't ended with the bungled Wing Commander: Prophecy. And while not everyone approved of Mark Hamill (and the live-action shots period), the series' beginnings are some of the finest we’ve ever seen!

That's It

Queue the R.E.M. song, because The NPD Group released their sales figures for the first six months of the year...lo and behold, sales of downloaded games have finally overtaken their retail counterparts. Officially the numbers are: 8.2 million games sold through retail stores and 11.2 million downloads sold.

It was bound to happen, and hopefully GameStop is better prepared for the digital age than Blockbuster was.

The bad news? NPD figures that PC Gaming revenues have declined 21% this year regardless of the purchase medium. Ouch.

Galaxy on Fire 2 Trailerhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/91/galaxy-on-fire-2-trailer

Fishlabs has uploaded a brand new trailer for Galaxy on Fire 2. We're very impressed, as it features plenty of in-game footage and gives us a great taste of what combat will look like.

They've also posted an interview with a few of the Fishlabs geniuses who discuss how the process of making the trailer actually influenced the game itself. It's worth noting that in their drive to both produce a great trailer and to show only gameplay, they've actually added features to the game that will enhance its cinematic value.]]>

But the Microsoft employee, who wouldn't say the word gay and instead repeatedly referred to it as "that word", refused to be persuaded. It got so bad that the town's Mayor tried to get involved to no avail.

Finally after the media began airing the story, Microsoft reinstated the account and issued an apology to all 800 of the town's residents.

New iPod Touch, Game Center info, and Jobs bought a new shirt http://www.blankgamer.com/news/76/new-ipod-touch-game-center-info-and-jobs-bought-a-new-shir

Apple held their annual fall press conference today and there were three issues of note for gamers.

1. As expected there is a new iPod Touch. It comes with the A4 processor, Retina Display, gyroscope, plus front- and rear-facing cameras. Apple managed to shave 1.3mm off the back and add 10 hours of audio battery... we'll see how that translates for gaming. The one big disappointment is that the rear-facing camera is a major downgrade from the iPhone 4; it produces still photos that are under 1MP. We're guessing that because the iPhone's 5MP camera is longer and bigger, it probably didn't fit in the iPod Touch's internal space.

2. Jobs assured us that Game Center will go live with next week's release of iOS 4.1. It will come with leader boards, rankings, stats, social networking, and intelligent matching. That last item was the most interesting to us, since it will match players based off rankings, stats, etc. If the Game Center app lives up to expectations, it could provide a major advantage over the DS and PSP.

3. Finally, Epic Games gave a very impressive demonstration of the Unreal Engine running on an iPod Touch. The game is called Project Sword and looks a lot like Fable. While we didn't get a real taste for the gameplay, the graphics are absolutely stunning. If they can create a nice control scheme, Epic could have a winner on their hands.

We'd be remiss if we didn't mention that Steve Jobs said Apple has sold more iPod Touches than the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP combined. Hard to believe this is true, and something tells us there is a little bit of number massaging going on at the Cupertino campus.

P.S. When Apple posts the video of the Press Conference, you'll see that Steve Jobs has updated his wardrobe with a brand new black shirt. Those skyrocketing Apple profits are really kicking in!

The Massively Awesome Diablo 3 Previewhttp://www.blankgamer.com/preview/73/the-massively-awesome-diablo-3-preview
It is the answer to dreams, the product of nostalgia, and the remembrance of the 90s. It spawns late nights in dorm rooms, windfalls in Mountain Dew sales and the gross over-exercising of pointer fingers. There is no other game which can claim to be the best at combining the following elements: easy to learn, addicting to play and incredible online.

Diablo is the defining series in the action role-playing genre; where role-playing is low and action is high. It almost seems blasphemous to the great role-playing games of our time to even partially include them in the genre, and yet role-playing elements (classes, leveling, loot, etc) are there, so we must. Sometimes Diablo is described as a ‘hack and slash’ title because of gameplay that relies on the player defeating as many enemies as quickly as possible. This should not be seen as a detraction. It is this gameplay along with the randomization of levels, enemies and loot, along with the ease of controlling your character that make the Diablo games some of the most addicting of our time. Yet it really is just a glorified point-and-click game, an incredibly entertaining one of course, but still a gameplay experience that is showing its age.

Announced on June 28, 2008 at Blizzcon, Diablo 3 was the answer to the demands of gamers since 2000. The announcement wasn’t a complete surprise; rumors had been ongoing for years (though many said the series would make the MMORPG jump). We also weren’t shocked when we heard that the game had been in some form of development since 2001.

After the announcement, Blizzard quickly gave a handful of interviews that clued us in to where the team was taking the series. The storyline would no longer be an afterthought but would really impact the game. Role-playing would also be emphasized though multiple quests, scenarios, and a character that you invest far more time and effort in molding. Finally, a brand new visual design that introduces additional colors, and de-emphasizes the character's light radius from the previous two games. It was this last change that raised holy fanboy hell. Legions of gamers, in fits of righteous indignation, signed an online petition demanding that Blizzard rethink their artistic direction.

But before we delve into the details, let’s look at the history of a series so beloved it would generate this type of response.

History

The PC role-playing industry was experiencing a sales lull. Consumer demand was in the midst of a seismic shift towards action-oriented games. Turn-based, puzzle and adventure games had lost their appeal, and since RPGs relied on all three genres, it appeared that the end was near. But the issue was also compounded by a glut of sub-par products. The high profit days of the 80s had become too tempting, and by the early 90s, store shelves were flooded with RPGs that were little more than rehashed Ultimas. Even the gems of that time were beset with problems. Elderscrolls 2: Daggerfall experienced so many technical difficulties that gamers were returning their copies out of frustration. Betrayal at Krondor was released on 3.5 floppy disks and wouldn’t receive true recognition until it was released an entire year later on CD-ROM. Needless to say, the industry was in dire need of an RPG that catered to the current consumer needs and would be developed with quality in mind.

And so Diablo was released on January 2, 1997.

The game was an immediate success. It was buoyed by a swell of hype based not only on pre-release materials, but also on the success of Blizzard itself. The company had achieved incredible levels of fame for the WarCraft series. The sentiment was that if Blizzard could take the obscure RTS genre and produce a megahit with it, then the sky was the limit with an RPG. Indeed they did. Diablo would sell over 2.5 million copies, receive countless awards and earn high praise from the gaming community. Metacritic records a score of 94, the best in its genre for the entire decade.

Of course, the game still had its critics. It was repetitive, they said. It had no storyline. And worst of all, it was an RPG in name only. That last bit was a particularly low blow by the ‘hard-core’ role-playing crowd, but 2.5 million casual gamers didn’t care.

Diablo’s plot was simple but included a clever twist at the end. The main character enters a town that has been terrorized by a catacomb-dwelling host of demons lead by Diablo who has possessed a former prince. Through 16 levels, the player must fight these demons until finally they reach the end, kill the prince and trap Diablo in a soulstone. In one final act of bravery, the character pierces himself with the soulstone in order to banish Diablo forever. But what was meant for salvation merely enables the character to be possessed by Diablo himself, which was Diablo’s plan all along. And so begins the storyline for Diablo 2.

Diablo 2 was released on June 29, 2000. Like any good sequel it didn’t fix what wasn’t broken, and merely expanded on what was already there.

It took the three-character class of the original and expanded it to five. It took the 16 levels of Diablo and expanded it to four acts, with many quasi-levels per act. It even included a secret cow level, as a gesture of good will and humor to fans. But most importantly, it took the subpar, cheat-riddled multiplayer experience of Diablo and replaced it with the secure and free Battle.net. So superior was the Diablo 2 multiplayer experience, one could make the case that the game was designed specifically with multiplayer in mind. And it was.

Diablo 2’s plot revolves around Diablo releasing two more demons, Mephisto and Baal, from their soulstones. The player must fight through the various acts, killing lesser demons and dealing with both Mephisto and Diablo. Gamers had to invest in the Diablo 2 expansion, Lord of Destruction, to slay Baal.

Needless to say that while the storyline was probably less creative than the original, the popularity of the sequel was no match for the original. Diablo 2 would sell over 4 million copies, win multiple “Game of the Year” awards, and set the stage for what would become an irresistible desire for Blizzard to return to the series. Because let's face it, you can’t sell 6.5 million copies of a series and walk away.

Preview

The truth is that unless you’ve lived under a rock, been stranded on a deserted island or never played a PC game in your life...you don’t need a background course on Diablo. So this is what you’ve been waiting for: a preview of everything you want to know about Diablo 3. We’d like to think that once you’ve read this, you won’t need to read anything else about the game. The next step will be getting a copy in your sweaty little paws.

So without further ado, let's get started.

The Storyline

This is what we know: Diablo 3 begins twenty years after the world of Sanctuary has been saved in Diablo 2. During this time, merchants selling their wares to fortune seekers have rebuilt the town of Tristram. Now known as ‘New Tristram’, the town has fallen back into ruin. The Cathedral has been thoroughly plundered and the fortune seekers look for adventure elsewhere. The game begins with a meteor crashing through the Cathedral and into the catacombs below. Little is known about the meteor; it could be one of the Archangels or even Diablo himself returned from the dead. Regardless, it has stirred the ancient evil that lives in the catacombs and the call has gone out for heroes to save Sanctuary once again.

While little has been released regarding the storyling, we know that Blizzard is attempting to make the plot as immersive as possible. Their ultimate goal is to create a multiplayer game with a single-player storyline.

The Content

For the sake of readability, we've taken the rest of the preview and broken it down into sub-sections:

Acts and their Locations
Act I

- New Tristram
A shantytown built on the ruins of Tristram, the only sound structure is the cathedral which promptly gets smacked by a meteor at the start of the game. A safe guess is that there is an accessible catacomb below the cathedral. We’ve already talked about New Tristram so we’ll move on.

Act II

- Caldeum
Once the most important trade city in Sanctuary, now Calduem is just a shadow of its proud past. The problems started when wealthy elitists fleeing the wars that destroyed their hometowns overran the city. These elitists infiltrated the politics of the city and pushed their own self-serving agendas.

- Borderlands
The wastelands that surround Caldeum are a desolate and dangerous place. No longer patrolled and monitored by Caldeum gaurds, the Borderlands are overrun by terrible monsters. Refugees from the Borderlands tell tales of a violent cult that is raising a demonic army.

Blizzard has announced that there will be two additional Acts, but have not yet released any details.

Caravan
The Caravan is a group of NPCs that will follow you as you travel throughout the world. At each new location they will set up camp and be available whenever you need them. The Caravan will be comprised of artisans, quest givers and others.

Classes
Diablo 3 has five classes. Each class has unique skills, attacks styles, attitudes, and cultural perspective. Much to everyone's excitement, you can now choose your character's gender independent of your class. Because each class is from a different civilization, they will each have unique interpretations of game events. Blizzard has stated that each class will have a unique back-story that will be slowly revealed throughout the game.

- Barbarian
Strong and tough, the Barbarian is the master of the melee attack. They are brutes and their attacks have a savage, primitive feel. Blizzard has confirmed that their skills are divided into three groups: Berserker, Juggernaught, and Battlemaster.

- Monk
Light and fast, the Monk should be considered the antithesis of the Barbarian. Divine warriors tasked with ridding the world of evil, they spend their entire lives devoted to extreme physical and spiritual training. They use a martial arts-inspired fighting style where skills are performed in three distinct stages. Stages from different skills can be combined to create unique attacks. A good example of this is a skill called the ‘Crippling Wave’, which consists of three attacks that each serves a unique purpose. The first slows down the victim, the second reduces the damage the victim can inflict, and the last increases the damage and the duration of the first two attacks.

Known skills are:
• Crippling Wave
• Impenetrable Defense
• Force Without Thought
• Exploding Palm
• Radiant Visage
• Seven-Sided Strike
• Inner Sanctuary
• Way of the Hundred Fists

- Wizard
Headstrong and rebellious, the wizard is a sorcerer/sorceress who has rejected the advice of their elders and studied magic that was forbidden because of its danger. With an insatiable thirst for knowledge, the wizard is no respecter of persons but has won the admiration of rebellious youth. This class is the standard magic user that all RPGs must have, but with a few twists. The Wizard is fast and smart, with a brooding mentality that fits perfectly with its willingness to rebel and meddle with darkness.

- Witch Doctor
Spiritual warriors who resemble the African Voodoo doctors, they attack both the mind and the body and have the ability to summon the undead without the need of bodies. Blizzard has confirmed three skills trees for the Witch Doctor: Zombie, Spirit and Voodoo.

- Demon Hunter [Updated]
The fifth and final class for Diablo 3 is the Demon Hunter. It will focus on both magic and ranged weapons such as grenades, throwing knifes, burning arrows, etc. At one time Blizzard considered having this class be an actual demon...and that influence is evident in the artwork. The ragged clothing and glowing red eyes hint at a mysterious character that is dabbling in the dark arts.

Crafting
The ability to create rare items is important in all RPGs. It provides a sense of control to balance out the randomness of drops and finds. Since crafting traditionally required dedication, time and repetitive clicking, Blizzard’s solution is their new feature, Artisans. Artisans are NPCs who you will encounter during the main quests. You will be required to earn their trust by saving them, completing a mission, etc. Once finished, they will follow you from Act to Act as part of your Caravan. There will be three types of Artisans: The Blacksmith, The Mystic and The Jeweler.

• The Blacksmith will craft, repair and sell armor and weapons. They also are able to insert gems into ‘gem sockets’, which will be found on weapons and armor.
• The Mystic will create spells, runes and charms. They will also enchant weapons and armor.
• The Jeweler will craft gems, amulets and rings. They will also combine gems and remove gems from items for other uses.

Artisans will gain experience as they craft. The more you use them, the faster they will level up, although the materials they need will become more difficult to find and the gold required will increase. Visual clues will be used to indicate the level of an artisan. Their camps will become more elaborate and Blizzard is considering having these visual upgrades be influenced by the type of crafting you prefer. For instance, if you have the Blacksmith constantly craft axes, his camp would have axe parts lying around. The level of the Artisan will also determine which recipes they are able to use.

Artisans will also provide you with information and gossip as you interact with them.

Dead
One welcome change is that corpses do not disappear from the screen during or after a battle. This greatly improves the atmosphere and immersion that the game and each individual battle provide. Once you move away from the scene of battle and you can no longer see the corpses, they will disappear.

Difficulty
Blizzard is putting a lot of effort to make sure that the difficulty of Diablo 3 is on par with its predecessor. The player should expect a natural scaling in difficulty as time progresses and there will be unlockable difficulty modes.

Environment
Another major change is interactive environments. Because Blizzard is using the Havok physics engine, they are allowing players to use the environment as a weapon. The Barbarian has a skill called Seismic Slam that causes the walls to collapse and kill nearby enemies. This isn’t restricted to the player, as enemies will also use the environment as part of their attacks.

Items
Items are the only way to customize your character, and are the major driving force behind re-playability. Some important changes to take note of: unique items are now called Legendary items, items now have ‘visual effects’ based on their type and if they are magical, and potions have been largely replaced with health globes. Blizzard has hinted that the sale of items will retain Diablo 2’s characteristics instead of those used in World of Warcraft. What exactly this means is unclear (and Blizzard has said they still aren’t sure how they will ultimately handle this), but it appears that you won’t be able to sell in-game items over eBay, etc.

- Armor
Screenshots have confirmed that all armor types from the previous two games will be grandfathered, plus two new types: pauldrons and pants. In addition, all armor selections will be displayed on your character during live play.

- Elixirs
While Blizzard hasn’t made any official statement on elixirs, they have been observed in demos. Elixirs of Strength, Dexterity, Vitality, Willpower and Regeneration have all been seen. All of them were Level 1 elixirs and it is probably safe to assume that higher levels will be available.

- Potions
Blizzard has removed potion dependence from the game. In Diablo 2, any foray into a dungeon would be preceded by an all out effort to collect as many potions as possible. That no longer applies in Diablo 3. Now enemies will drop health orbs that players will use instead of potions. Because of this, health becomes far more limited and there is no longer what amounts to infinite health. Blizzard claims that this enables developers to design enemies that are far more interesting because they are not just focused on brute strength. Now monsters will actually wear your character down over time and challenge you in “different ways”. Because of this, they have also put more thought into the skills system. Blizzard’s goal is to replace potions with skills. Instead of the player just using a potion they will try to be creative using their skills.

- Runes
So far the biggest change is that runes now affect skills instead of items. Observed runes are the Hydra Rune (increases quantity), Viper Rune (increases lethality), Force Rune (increases power), and the Energy Rune (reduces resource cost).

- Gems
Gems have been given additional categories and are now crafted with the Jeweler. Gem quality has 14 levels. Monsters drop the first five, and the rest require a Jeweler to craft.

Monsters
Blizzard has already confirmed many monsters, including many carryovers from the previous games. It is worth noting that the theme of increased awareness and interactivity has been carried over to the monsters, who will also interact with each other just like NPCs. Sometimes the monsters will even attack each other… here are the ones we consider the most interesting:

- The Unburied
Where mass graves exist, these creatures will arise. Made of various rotten body parts (legs, arms, heads, etc)...the unburied are large, brutish and difficult to bring down. They have spikes sticking out of their backs, which are shards of stone stuck to the body parts that comprise the monster. Blizzard’s screenshots show several unburied attacking at once.

- Gnarled Walker
Giant demonic trees, these guys are Ents on steroids. While they move slowly once within melee range they deliver quick powerful attacks that can quickly overwhelm a player. Consider them a replacement monster for the Thorned Hulks from Diablo 2.

- Mistress of Pain
Half spider, and half woman, this is one bizarre monster. Blizzard’s concept art shows her in a tattered Victorian dress with an elaborate head covering. She has an appropriately ugly face with mouth that looks like it could rip your throat out. Her legs are a mixture of spider and human, covered in some sort of leather and gold plated clothing. She has an arachnid abdomen that is protected by a spine-like rib cage. Lastly her abdomen is able to shoot silk that impedes player movement and launch explosive projectiles. She is a monster you don’t want to meet in a dark dungeon.

It’s interesting that this monster shares a name with the Mistress of Pain from Warcraft 3.

- Siegebreaker Assault Beast
Blizzard’s goal was to create a monster that dwarfed anything previously seen in the Diablo series. The result is a gigantic boss that relies on brute strength to destroy its enemies. Think “large and in charge” and you’ve got a good idea of what this monster is about.

The Siegebreaker Assault Beast video contained the first example of a monster ‘fatality’. In the video, the Siegebreaker bites off the Barbarian’s head as a final move, ala Mortal Kombat. We do not know if fatalities are unique to this boss or if all the bosses/monsters will have them.

Another unexplained piece of concept art released by Blizzard shows a Siegebreaker with some sort of creature riding it with reins. Nothing else is known about this, but we thought we should mention it.

- Thousand Pounder
Summoned from hell, this monster is created piece by piece in front you. As his name implies he is grotesquely overweight and he’s not happy about it or you. Initially his attack moves are slow but extremely powerful. Once he is near death he will, as Blizzard puts it, have a ‘temper tantrum’. From that point on his attacks will be faster, his tattoos will glow and he will have new attack animations and special effects.

Blizzard has stated that the Thousand Pounder will not be a major boss. Fans have speculated that he may be a randomized ‘mini-boss’. It is also possible, based on concept art, that there will be multiple Thousand Pounders.

NPCs
Because Blizzard is putting far more effort into the Diablo 3 storyline, NPCs are more interactive and have elaborate back-stories. They each have unique voices and dialogue, and players can choose different questions and responses during conversations with NPCs.

Two Notable NPCs:

- Deckard Cain
The only officially confirmed returning character from the previous games, Deckard will assist the player as they attempt to complete quests. It is Deckard Cain who observes the meteor crash. He had returned to the Cathedral to find clues on how to defeat the evil below it.

- Leah
She is Deckard Cain’s adopted daughter. Not much is known about her other than she will act on Deckard Cain’s behalf. Based on Blizzard’s comments and released video, we’re betting you’re going to see a lot of her.

Quests
One of the major changes in the game is the quest. Blizzard has completely revamped the system in order to provide a more story-driven experience and increase replayability. There are class specific quests, randomized quests, and main story-line quests.

Scrolls
Blizzard has confirmed that scrolls will also return in Diablo 3. Here is what we know:

- Scroll of Detection
No official word on what this does, but it can be seen in screenshots released by Blizzard. Maybe it detects hidden monsters?

- Scroll of Identity
It returns for Diablo 3...we assumed it identifies items, as usual.

- Scroll of Town Portal
They’re gone and they ain’t coming back, folks. Blizzard has confirmed that this scroll will not make it into Diablo 3, because they want to prevent rushing and beating nightmare mode. Now you’ll only get waypoints, and you’ll like it.

- Scroll of Superior Protection
Increases armor strength for a certain amount of time.

- Scroll of Wealth
A new scroll confirmed by Blizzard that allows the player to sell items without returning to town.

User Interface
While the user interface looks largely the same, the stamina bar has disappeared.

The End

Well that's it folks! We hope you enjoyed the article and found it useful. We'll update the content as necessary, so keep coming back. Feel free to leave comments with your thoughts...we appreciate it.]]>

Interview with Dragon Age 2's Pony Tailhttp://www.blankgamer.com/interview/64/interview-with-dragon-age-2s-pony-tail

In case you missed it, the beautiful dental medicine student stole the show applying fake tattoos and snapping pictures of Dragon Age 2 fans. Within an hour of initializing the streaming video, “Pony Tail” had her own Facebook fan page. Almost instantly, 80 people joined and populated the photo album with stalker-esque screenshots from the webcam. The fan base grew and Pony Tail even got her own fan art.

Just when every normal member of society started to get worried about creeping out the long-haired beauty, she joined in the fun bringing her disarming smile and braided hair to the fan page. With good humor, she accepted their love but remained aloof.

Blank Gamer has taken the responsibility to introduce Pony Tail, the latest gaming Phenom, to the world. We caught up with Pony Tail, who’s name remains mysteriously shrouded behind her heroine title, in Cologne, Germany. She is Turkish and was born and raised in Germany. Her friend, Lala, helped translate for us.

Blank Gamer: So, how long have you worked for EA? Is this your regular job?

Pony Tail: I worked twice for EA and no. I’m studying dentist medical and I am working since 5 years in the software area.

Blank Gamer: Here is a question from one of the fans from Facebook: Markéta Ambrožová wants to know if you like games, and if so what are your favorites?

Pony Tail: I do like games. I am a gamer. My favorite game is FIFA, and jump and run games and all games of Super Mario. Oh, I like need for speed too.

Blank Gamer: What games are you playing now?

Pony Tail: Now I play new Super Mario Bros

Blank Gamer: Xbox? PC? PS3? wii?

Pony Tail: wii, ds, pc, ps3

Blank Gamer: So, I notice you didn't mention Dragon Age…

Pony Tail: I am not allowed to give a comment about Dragon Age. EA doesn’t want it.

Blank Gamer: Ah ok...I'd like to pursue that, but I'll ease off ;-) Paul Bönisch from the fan page wanted to know what your first thoughts were when you heard about the Facebook fan page dedicated to you? And Cana Marks, wanted to be sure you knew that not all of us [the chatroom/fanpage] are crazy and most of us are just engaging in some zany fun.

Pony Tail: I was surprise. I couldn’t believe it. They told me directly on the same day. I new it fast. After one hour we had the cams the fanpage was there.

Blank Gamer: So what went through your mind when they told you? Has your long hair ever gotten you attention like this?

Pony Tail: I was very happy. I couldn’t believe it. Yes. A lot people asks me if its real hair.

Blank Gamer: And is it?

Pony Tail: Of course :)

Blank Gamer: That's what I thought. Have you always had long hair?

Pony Tail: No, when I was little my mom always cut my hair and I thought, “one day when I grow up, I will have long hair.” Since I am 14. [Blank Gamer translation note: She meant “Ever since I was 14.” She’s not 14 now]

Blank Gamer: And now look what it’s done for you! Here is another Fan question: Jamie René Irwin wants to know if you braid your hair yourself and if so, do you have some tips for other girls with long hair? And I will add, that there are a lot of boys with long hair as well. I saw a few through the webcam that day.

Pony Tail: I do my hair by myself. I wash my hair everyday. It takes hours to dry them. They should take a good conditioner and take care for their hair.

Blank Gamer: What kind of pastimes and hobbies do you enjoy, besides drying and braiding your hair?

Pony Tail: I love technical stuff, call my friends, play pc games and being with my friends and family. I love my family. They are very important to me. We are 4 sisters and I am number 3.

Blank Gamer: When you said “technical stuff”, what do you mean by that?

Pony Tail: Because of my job I like that kind of stuff.

Blank Gamer: Oh ok...Is there a Mr. Pony Tail or Pony Tail boyfriend? If so, what does he think about all this attention?

Pony Tail: I don’t have a boyfriend.

Blank Gamer: Well, after all this, I'm sure you'll have no shortage of internet prospects! There is a contingency on the internet that wants to get you to the PAX conference. Is that something you’d want to go to? We heard through the grapevine that if the Dragon Age fan page got enough fans, they'd bring you to PAX. Is that something you’d like to see happen?

Pony Tail: Wow, that sounds great. They told me about it in Cologne. I would luv to do it if somebody want me there.

Blank Gamer: What happened to the sword after GamesCom?

Pony Tail: Everybody wanted the sword, but we didn’t get it. They will use it at some other fairs

Blank Gamer: Nice. If you were going to fight evil in the world, would you:
A) Use a dental scraper
B) Use a Pike
C) Use your pony tail whip?

Pony Tail: C. I would use my pony tail. I have it always with me.

Blank Gamer: Is there anything you want to say to your fans?

Pony Tail: First of all I am very happy about there support. I love them for trusting me. I hope, that they will always trust themselves and believe in themselves. I hope to see them at the next Gamescom.

Blank Gamer: Ok, last question....What’s your opinion of döner kebaps?

Pony Tail: That’s funny. I love döners because they makes you pretty.

Blank Gamer: Ok Pony Tail (Still feels silly to me to refer to you like that) auf wiedersehen and elveda.

Pony Tail: Thank u byeeeeeee elvedaaaaa hoscakal

There you have it Pony Tail fans, the one, the only, the teeth fix’n, evil fight’n, pony tail whip’n heroine of Gamescom 2010, Pony Tail.

New Neverwinter title coming next year!http://www.blankgamer.com/news/63/new-neverwinter-title-coming-next-year
As expected the game will center around the city of Neverwinter. Although now, having hit some tough times, Neverwinter is in shambles and no one knows who rules the city. Plus with the undead marching on the city and a terrible Spellplague killing many people, the population just isn't what it use to be. In fact, we don't understand why anyone calls this place home.

Press Release:
Atari, one of the world's most recognized videogame publishers and Cryptic Studios, the acclaimed developers behind City of heroes, City of Villains, Champions Online and Star Trek Online, announced today the development of Neverwinter for PC. Neverwinter is a new online roleplaying game based on Wizards of the Coast's global property Dungeons & Dragons and the beloved city of Neverwinter.

Once a bustling location, Neverwinter has faced a great many disasters in the past hundred years. Rule of the city remains unclear following the unfortunate demise of the last Lord of Neverwinter and factions still battle for dominance after the all-consuming Spellplague took a high toll on the population. Even Neverwinter's dead are beginning to rise from their graves and march upon the city they once called home.

"We're beyond thrilled to develop a brand new version of Neverwinter. It's been years since the original became a gaming icon and we're honored to work with such a great franchise," said Jack Emmert, COO of Cryptic Studios. "We've been working closely with Wizards of the Coast and R.A. Salvatore to create an authentic D&D adventure filled with compelling fiction and exciting gameplay."

In Neverwinter, players choose to become one of five classic D&D classes and team up with friends or computer-controlled allies to form five-person co-op groups. Players also create their own storylines and quests utilizing an extremely user-friendly content generation system, tentatively codenamed Forge.

"Wizards of the Coast is excited to invite millions of fans back to Neverwinter with the launch of R.A. Salvatore's Gauntlgrym," said Liz Schuh, Brand Director for Dungeons & Dragons at Wizards of the Coast. "And we're excited about the prospects for great digital gaming experiences based on this epic world."

Neverwinter for PC is scheduled to release in Q4 2011 and is part of a multi-platform event, including a book trilogy from New York Times best-selling author R. A. Salvatore and a tabletop roleplaying game from Wizards of the Coast. Book one in Salvatore's Neverwinter trilogy, titled Gauntlgrym, releases on October 5 of this year and lays the groundwork for the Neverwinter storyline. The novel previews the settings, characters and monsters from the PC game and details the events that lead up to this highly anticipated PC gaming experience.

Another Great Series Continues in BioShock Infinitehttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/44/another-great-series-continues-in-bioshock-infinite

Irrational Games announced on August 12, 2010 that their next project will be the third installment of the hugely successful BioShock franchises. However, take note, Irrational Games created the original BioShock, but were not involved with BioShock 2. So, publisher 2K Games decided to give the baby back to papa for its introduction to clouds.

Here is the press release by Ken Levine:
Keeping secrets is hard.

The last three years for me have been dominated by a single question: "What are you guys doing there?"

Some of you were pretty certain it was an X-COM game, which I can now safely say it is not. It is also not part of the Freedom Force, SWAT, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, Kingdom Hearts or Yar's Revenge franchises. The time for discussing what Irrational Games is NOT doing is over.

Today we announce BioShock Infinite.

That's right, this is a BioShock game.

It's a sequel.

But it's also not a sequel.

Let me explain.

At Irrational Games, we believe that in order to fulfill expectations, you have to defy expectations.

When we completed the original BioShock, we felt we had said all we wanted to say with Rapture, but we weren't done with the idea that is BioShock. BioShock is so much more than a story of a single place or a single time. We had so much more we wanted to say.

There are two core principles for us that define a BioShock game. First, it has to be set in a world that is both fantastical and yet also grounded in the human experience. Second, it has to provide gamers with a large set of tools, and then set them loose in an environment that empowers them to solve problems in their own way.

It would have been easier for us to go back to the well. We could have taken the easy route. We could have simply done more of the same, but we would not have been true to ourselves as game developers. Making the original BioShock was hard. We challenged ourselves every step of the way, and we tossed aside many elements and ideas simply because they weren't good enough.

So when we started the sequel, we said to ourselves: 'We want to expand on those core principles, but beyond that, there are no sacred cows. Everything else that people know or think they know about BioShock is open for negotiation.'

You will find yourself in a completely new world. Columbia is not an unknown secret city at the bottom of the sea. It's a creation of an America transforming from a regional agrarian collection of states into a world power with global reach.

You now play an actual character, and not a cypher who is unaware of his own identity. You are Booker Dewitt, a particular character with an established history, with a voice you will hear as he talks to himself and others in the game.

You've come to Columbia for a reason: to find a mysterious young woman named Elizabeth and bring her safely out of the city. She will travel with you, interact with you, and react to the situations you cause to happen, and through your relationship with her, we're able to tell the story of this new and amazing world.

This world of Columbia presents radical differences in scale from what you are used to. You're not crawling through corridors on the ocean floor, claustrophobic with the weight of the ocean bearing down on you. Instead you find yourself navigating through huge environments, zipping around on Sky-Lines at eighty miles per hour and getting into firefights at ranges of two thousand yards.

In fact, there is so much new and radical about BioShock Infinite that we simply can't tell you all about it in one revelation. What we present to the world today is merely the tip of a very large iceberg. In the coming months we'll begin to reveal more of what BioShock Infinite is all about and let the world know why we are so excited.

For now, we want to thank you all for your patience, and for sticking with us all these many months while we labored in silence. The time for silence is over. First up for the fans of this site is another episode of Irrational Behavior with Shawn Elliott that covers the announcement of BioShock Infinite and the work that led up to it. I'm sure you'll dig it.

Down the road a bit, actual gameplay footage awaits. It's something you're going to want to watch more than once. Trust me on this one.

Lord of the Rings: War in the North Videohttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/43/lord-of-the-rings-war-in-the-north-video

Snowblind Studios has released a video for their upcoming game, Lord of the Rings: War in the North. The video appears to be an in-game movie of a battle between some ragged orcs and an ultra-powerful human, elf and dwarf. Not much we can say about this, looks interesting but it definitely does not have strong connections with the books...which is always dangerous at best.

Dungeons...your dark side will love it!http://www.blankgamer.com/news/42/dungeonsyour-dark-side-will-love-it

Our second announcement from Kalypso Media is another new title called Dungeons. A third person strategy/simulation game that puts a twist on the 'usual' as you get to play the evil Dungeon Lord who must defeat the heroes looking for treasure.

But things aren't all roses for our Dungeon Lord. Apparently he has an evil ex-girlfriend, who being a fiend through and through has deviously tricked him out of the best part of the dungeon. You must guide the vile Lord back into the deep dark places where he can exact a sweet satisfying revenge on his vicious former lover. Not sure what this revenge will be, but it's going to be a lot worse than a really bad breakup.

Dungeons is scheduled for Q1 2011.

Tropico 4 announced!http://www.blankgamer.com/news/41/tropico-4-announced

Kalypso Media announced today that they are hard at work on Tropico 4, which is not a surprise considering the success of its prequel! As usual, the player will take the role of El Presidente who must decide whether to be a kind, benevolent dictator or a terrible tyrant. And considering the nuclear plant in the above screenshot, let's hope everyone chooses to be benevolent. Tropico 4 will feature multiple new campaigns, 20 new buildings, six new disasters (nuclear holocaust was not mentioned), Facebook and Twitter integration, and much more.

The game will broaden its strategic appeal by allowing you to appoint ministers who help shape and enforce your mission. In addition, it will contain a National Agenda feature which is described as receiving "objectives from Tropican factions, foreign geopolitical powers or opportunities relating to current island events such as ongoing disasters."

This game is currently scheduled to be released in Q2 2011.

Call of Duty Black Opshttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/40/call-of-duty-black-ops

Is the world ready for another Call of Duty? Activision sure thinks so. I mean, when you have a winning horse, why not ride it into the grave. Then again, they might be on to something. Boys have always enjoyed shooting things. As long as there are new things to shoot, and slightly different ways to shoot said things, they can continue making Call of Duty games. Even the earliest cave drawing support this theory, and I see no reason why we shouldn't have a Call of Duty with Black Ops in the title.

The RC Bomb, or as the Marines call it, a bomb on a FREAKIN' remote controlled car, seems to be the star of this next Call of Duty game. This stroke of genius might set gaming history by combining stuff to shoot at and a micro-machine racing game. I am looking forward to shooting things in this title and you cannot contain my excitement to park one of those explosive RC cars up under a sniper's snarky, squinting face.]]>

Amazing Rage demo on the iPhonehttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/35/amazing-rage-demo-on-the-iphone

John Carmack just gave an amazing demonstration of id Software's Rage running at 60fps on an iPhone 4. He went on to say that the game could even run on the iPhone 2G, but it would look best on the iPad. How he managed this is beyond us, but he did manage to slip in a comment that iPhone 4 games will "kill anything done on" the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Nice!

A short version of the game will be available in the AppStore by the end of year, with a much larger follow-up sometime next year. Carmack also mentioned that he is considered releasing something for the Android Market but that wouldn't happen for at least a year and would depend on certain market factors.

Sony and Google get busy!http://www.blankgamer.com/news/32/sony-and-google-get-busy

Engadget is reporting that Sony Ericsson is in the final stages of developing a PSP/Phone hybrid that uses Google's Android operating system. The rumored phone will have a slide-out controller with the standard PSP buttons, a large display, camera and a 1GHz processor. Their sources also report that Sony will sell games through the Android Marketplace, including titles such as God of War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, etc.

Obviously if this is true, it is a really big deal and should finally provide Android with some mobile gaming competition with Apple. Yet as an outsider we do wonder what Sony has to gain in this relationship? Since they will be providing all of the crucial content and expertise...something tells us we have more to learn on this product.

Learn the art of Deception in R.U.S.E.http://www.blankgamer.com/news/31/learn-the-art-of-deception-in-ruse

Ubisoft thinks they've cracked the nut that tormented strategy games since the beginning. Have they created an AI smart enough to deceive? Strategy games have always suffered from the same problem: either the AI is too predictable and you're able to maneuver your cannon up under the flabby cheeks of the opposing general, or the computer opponent knows everything you are doing, uses and abuses you until moving to Miami like Lebron.

Fight a war of perception using recon units & your spying network to gather intelligence on your enemy and then strike at his Achilles heel! Use overturning deception skills to mislead your enemy: decoys, camouflage, radio silence, deciphering, intoxication...combine military maneuvers & cunning stratagems for victory: your brains are the ultimate weapon!

As risky as it is to get excited about copy written by a marketing department to infuse...well...excitement, I can't help but hope Ubisoft might have it this time. At least it will be cool zooming in and out with their IRISZOOM engine.]]>

It's like the Neverending Story, except there aren't any flying dogs or boy warriors - just a story that never seems to go away. Kotaku says that an inside source has confirmed that Gearbox Software is taking over development of Duke Nukem Forever from 3DRealms. Even better, there might be a playable demo by the end of the year, our better judgment says 'no' to the demo.

Since 3DRealms laid off most of their staff, George Broussard has made vague comments suggesting the development of the game would continue. Not that we're surprised... shouldn't there be something to release after 10 years of effort?

New Species for Star Wars: The Old Republichttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/25/new-species-for-star-wars-the-old-republic

Considering how successfully the Star Wars/BioWare combination has been, we're always eager for any news on Star Wars: The Old Republic that we can get our hands on! So you can bet we were excited to see an update from BioWare this morning.

BioWare has announced there will be four new playable species in Star Wars: The Old Republic. The Sith Pureblood, Miraluka, Mirialans and the Zabraks.

Sith Pureblood

Miraluka

Mirialans

Zabraks

BioWare Press Release:
So far we've only dropped hints about the range of playable species in Star Wars: The Old Republic. You may have heard about the Rattataki Bounty Hunter, Chiss Imperial Agent, or the Twi'lek Smuggler, but we can tell you now that all classes will include optional non-human species.

Among the most exciting character types you'll be able to choose from is the Sith Pureblood. For the first time ever in a video game, Players can choose to be a member of the original Sith Race, the red-skinned descendants of such notorious Sith Lords as Naga Sadow and Marka Ragnos. The rage of these fallen ancestors of the Sith Pureblood lives on in the Sith Warriors who dominate the battlefield with their intimidating presence and aggressive tactics.

A near-human species with unrivaled strength in the Force, Miraluka can become powerful Jedi Knights. Hailing from a homeworld with no visible light waves, the Miraluka evolved to see their surroundings entirely through the Force. To cover their vestigial eye sockets, they wear veils and blindfolds that range from colorful to austere. Miraluka Jedi Knights charge into battle with the Force guiding the graceful attacks of their Lightsabers to always hit home.

As one of the most wise and mystical species in the galaxy, the green-skinned Mirialans can become powerful Jedi Consulars. Mirialans are known for their symbolic facial tattoos and natural agility. They are also respected for their patience and insight. Mirialan Jedi Consulars lead Republic Forces into battle with assurance and harness powerful Force energies to defeat their enemies.

Among the slaves serving the Sith Empire, there are many aliens with Force potential, but few species have the grit to join the ranks of the Sith. A proud species from an inhospitable world, Zabraks are among the few with the determination and ferocity to become Sith Inquisitors. Sporting horns and facial tattoos, these fierce aliens are self-reliant and aggressive. Zabrak Sith Inquisitors intimidate both their enemies and their colleagues with their fighting prowess and ruthless command of the Force.

As excited for these playable species as we hope you are, the list is not yet complete. We look forward to announcing further options in the coming months. We will also have additional details on the species above, so check the Inhabitants section regularly to make sure you get the latest information available.

Torchlight 2 announced and detailedhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/20/torchlight-2-announced-and-detailed

Runic Games confirmed what the entire world assumed, Torchlight 2 is under development. Which is really good news for the pessimists among us who think Diablo 3 will never see the light of day. Regardless, Torchlight 2 (the sequel to one of the best games of 2009) will continue to build on everything you loved in the first one but more importantly it will add co-op multiplay!

Right now Runic's scheduled release day is Spring of 2011.

Press Release of the break.
Torchlight II ignites the franchise created and developed by Runic Games in this exciting sequel to the award-winning Action RPG Torchlight. Runic Games, located in Seattle, is a veteran team composed of the designers and leads of projects like Diablo, Diablo II, Mythos, Fate, and Torchlight, which won the Game Developer's Choice Award for Best Debut of 2009.

Torchlight II is richly textured with our unique art style, drawing from traditional animation influences and expanding on the whimsical and quirky world captured in the original Torchlight. We aim for that broad appeal that's appropriate for older kids, but is really intended for the kid in every adult.

CO-OP ACTION

The most exciting new feature of Torchlight II is the multiplayer element. Play with your friends, and use the free peer-to-peer matchmaking service to meet new players of a similar level and interest. Together players will discover expansive randomized outdoor areas and deep ominous caverns; random instanced and persistent dungeons, a huge variety of all new monsters and villains, endless variations of loot to find, and quests to complete. Players journey through the perilous Overworld, enjoying all new weather features, time of day events, and a rich and cunning story to drive gameplay.

BACKSTORY

Beyond the town of Torchlight lies a world shrouded in adventure and mystery. Guardian-warrior Syl appears in a prophetic dream, summoning the player to the Estherian Steppes. There, you meet with the Destroyer and soon venture across the continent of Vilderan, an exotic frontier besieged by forces of evil. A discovery unfolds, that the Alchemist, following his conquest of dark ember, disappeared on his quest to defeat the unknown corrupted force responsible for destroying the mystical race of Estherians. Aided by Syl, the remaining Estherian Guardians, and clues left behind by the missing Alchemist, you will find yourself battling a powerful enemy that threatens to unravel the elements of the entire world.

Runic Games will release Torchlight II initially as a digital download in Spring of 2011.

Mass Effect 3 = Crazy Number of Story Variationshttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/18/mass-effect-3-=-crazy-number-of-story-variations

Chris Hudson, the Bioware Project Lead, says that there are going to be over 1,000 story line variations in Mass Effect 3 based off of the previous games in the series. This confirms what we expected, Mass Effect 3 will allow players to continue story lines from the previous games. Unfortunately for the developers this makes things pretty difficult.

Chris said, "We plan out the larger plot points of the story from one game to the next, but it would be impossible to plan it all in advance."

"More importantly," he continued, "we'd never be able to plan as many creative opportunities if we'd do it all up front. Instead, we record what a player has done in a play-through, and then we have all of those choices available that writers can refer to as they build storylines...

"Numerically, it's over 1,000 variables that we'll have access to for shaping the Mass Effect 3 experience for people who've played the previous games."

The interview can be found in PC Zone magazine.

On a side note, we've tagged Mass Effect 3 as a PC and Xbox 360 game based off it's predecessors. This in no way implies that BioWare has given us the final word on supported platforms. Thanks, have a nice day!]]>

When it comes to Fable 3 news, when it rains it pours! This morning Lionhead Studios released the opening cinematic to their much hyped RPG. The video shows the plight of an oppressed city through the eyes of a chicken fighting for freedom. It's a little odd, but frankly we'll play this game regardless of what's in the opening cinematic.

Peter Molyneux says AppStore Gold Rush to end. Soon.http://www.blankgamer.com/news/15/peter-molyneux-says-appstore-gold-rush-to-end-soon

In an interview over at Develop, Peter Molyneux predicts a rapidly approaching end to the AppStore gold mine for small developers. Mr. Molyneux says, "We are just one or two games of high production quality away from all this coming to an end. That's my belief. It's inevitable that a Star Wars or Disney game, a five million dollar iPhone project, will be released. And when it does, consumers are going to like it. They're going to say 'I can pay 59p for this [indie iPhone game] or I can pay 59p for this [triple-A iPhone game].'"

The reality is, he is probably right. But we still think that the ease of publishing a game on the AppStore AND the forced audience, provides small developers with far more opportunity than they previously had.

Peter Molyneux continues the interview with choice quotes on Fable 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare!

The Sims get Medievalhttp://www.blankgamer.com/news/14/the-sims-get-medieval

Think your Sim would look better as a wench in a leather corset? Well have no fear, because EA announced today that the next edition of The Sims will feed all of those secret medieval desires! And they aren't content with just leather corsets. Expect the game to include multiple quests such as: arranging a royal wedding, fighting an evil sorcerer and finding the fountain of youth.

Right now EA says we can expect this medieval adventure in the Spring of 2011!

Press Release:

The Sims Medieval Provides a Fresh Setting, Innovative Gameplay, and All-New Features Unlike Anything Ever Seen within the Franchise

Go back in time and get medieval! The EA Play Label of EA today announced The Sims Medieval, a new series currently in development that places the popular Sims characters from The Sims game into the Middle Ages and brings players robust, compelling gameplay never seen before in the history of The Sims. For the first time, players can create heroes, venture on quests, build and control a kingdom, and play every Hero Sim character in the land. Creativity will soar as players tell stories like never before full of drama, romance, conflict, and comedy.

"The Middle Ages is a time of intrigue, legend, and excitement. It offers a perfect backdrop for a brand new series from The Sims studio due to the limitless stories that can be told," said Scott Evans, General Manager of The Sims Studio at EA. "The Sims Medieval offers a new way for players to experience The Sims which we hope fans will enjoy, and it features gameplay that fans of strategy and role-playing games will find appealing such as controlling an entire kingdom and quest-based gameplay mechanics."

The Sims Medieval offers players a chance to build up a medieval kingdom, controlling characters from all walks of life, from Kings and Queens, to Knights and Wizards, Blacksmiths and Bards. It provides a host of storytelling possibilities in the form of quests, from crafting a legendary sword to arranging a royal wedding, to protecting the kingdom from an evil sorcerer, to finding the fountain of youth. Every quest plays out differently depending on which Hero Sim the player is controlling.

The destiny of the kingdom rests in the players' hands. Will players build up their kingdom through internal expansion, or perhaps look for a more imperial type of domination, expanding their rule by conquering territories? Will they take on quests in pursuit of fame, or focus on the health and wellbeing of their people? The choice is theirs! With the start of every new game, players will be able to select a new ambition for their kingdom, and embark on a new set of stories.

Everything in The Sims Medieval is crafted to create an immersive medieval world, from the quest-based gameplay, to the medieval objects such as swords and stocks and thrones, right down to the warm look of the characters, and the painterly approach to the world itself. Players can choose to customize every new Hero that comes to the kingdom, including selecting their traits and their fatal flaw. Players get close to their characters, not only sending them on epic quests, but also making sure they carry out their daily responsibilities such as healing the sick, trading for exotic goods, or forging armor. From having a baby to competing in a royal tournament, what happens to their Sims is up to the player. The time of romance and chivalry is back with The Sims Medieval.

Developed by The Sims Studio, The Sims Medieval for PC / Mac will be available in spring 2011 and has not yet been rated by the ESRB. For more information about The Sims Medieval please visit the Official Website.

Annual sales of PC games reached $13.1 billion in 2009, which represents a 3% increase in worldwide PC gaming revenues. With the creation of "Master Mind", which allows the user to play all PC games on the market, Jedi Mind, Inc. expects to capture 3-5% of this existing market, by offering an alternative gaming experience. The Company will begin offering the application through their website as a software download in July and expects to sell "Master Mind" through traditional gaming retail stores and through partnerships with some of the biggest gaming software companies in the world.
